Unfortunately, by 1968 Chrysler didn’t offer the special “letter series” 300 any more, but that doesn’t mean that you should shy away from the later cars; they still have a lot to offer! This particular convertible is being sold here on eBay, where bidding is just over $1,000 as I write but the reserve hasn’t been met yet. Although the car has spent most of it’s life in North Carolina, it’s now an Indianapolis, Indiana resident–at least until the end of this auction.
The seller makes it very clear that this is a project car, and rust abatement will be included as part of the project. The previous owner claimed to have found the car in a barn, where it had been since 1977, and that the car was originally purchased in Lexington, North Carolina. The current owner has had the car for five years but hasn’t gotten to it yet. By the way, did you notice the mid-1970’s Lotus Elite in the first picture and the Jensen-Healey in this one? Someone must like Lotus 907 engines! What other classics do you see in the background of these pictures?
Even looking like this, there’s still some beauty in those crisp lines. There’s rust under the car, though, as you can see from several pictures in the auction listing. Actually, it looks like there’s more rust underneath than there is in the sides, which I find quite unusual.
There’s not much in the way of soft goods that you’ll be able to save on the inside. The seller claims that this car has 65,185 miles and has documentation showing it had 57,347 miles when it passed North Carolina inspection in 1976.
Unfortunately this car neither runs nor drives, and we don’t even know if the 440 V8 engine is freely turning over. I am heartened by the air conditioning compressor and that I think it has a belt on it. What do you think? Is this a worthwhile project? And what other cars do you see in the background of the pictures (you can count the ones in the ad as well)?
Did you ask if you could have a letter? OK, the letter is Y for yuck. No, just kidding, the letter is still Y but for yes. The 68 300 convertible was always a nice looking car and this one should be saved, if it can be bought for a reasonable figure.
A couple Isettas, roadster, Bronco, Older Crysler, I think a couple MGs, Toyota pickup and Landcruiser, early Ford pickup and an International pickup.
Look at the length of the quarter panels! Wow!
Always liked the 300’s letters or not. These were long low and good looking cars, with the bucket seats and console the were classy. There’s a lot of work needed here but, this would be a great summer cruiser. The only down side is you need a warehouse to store these things, they don’t make garages like they used to.
I’m afraid letter/s will be 300Y (Why?) or 300WTF (What the funk?) did I just buy?
Off course you guys know the last letter series was the 1965 L…………..
First car I went over 100 mph in (4 door sedan though) I’d love this one. Lots of work, but nothing insurmountable.
I would buy it if they offered it to me.
I had a blue 68 2d fastback and it was loaded!
I miss that car! [sad eyes]
