While nearly 300,000 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupes were built in 1970, almost 26,000 were assembled by GM of Canada. They were all V8-powered and 3,300 were equipped as Z25 SS 396 models. The seller’s project car is said to be one of them and comes in a seldom seen color, Shadow Gray. Possibly in parts and pieces now, this Chevy is available here on eBay where the current bid is $2,025, the reserve is unmet, and the Buy It Now is $12,000.

Though built in Canada, this Chevelle now resides in Luttrell, Tennessee. The vehicle has Canadian documentation (per the seller), so this seems like a real-deal car. It is no longer numbers matching as the block, heads, and intake (all in pieces) are from a 1969 Chevrolet. The car was built with the 396 engine rated at 350 hp and paired with a TH-400 automatic transmission (still around?). This was a bench seat car with the shifter on the column.

We’re told the Chevelle needs floor and trunk pans as well as rear quarter panels, not included in the sale. But spare hoods are provided along with other parts that are scattered around near the car. While it has power disc brakes, it did not come with power steering, a bit of an oddity considering the weight over the front wheels.

Photos show the car on a lift, but also with the frame sitting all by itself. So, we’re not sure how much will be assembled when you go to pick it up. It’s clearly a project that can be built anyway you want but keeping it as close to its Canadian origins would make it more valuable in the end. We’re told the rear glass is not missing, but the windshield seems to have a gaping hole in it.

I love it! I’m appalled at folks that leave Jags and Ferraris out to rot, I suppose, this should upset me,,but it doesn’t. Why? Because THIS is what I remember 1970 Chevelles turning into. Oh sure, time after time we see these pristine examples, when THIS was the majority. Don’t get me wrong, fantastic car, when new, even the 2nd owner, but after that, it was all downhill. This is what the last owner ended up with. Naturally, most know my feelings on this stuff, but for gits and shingles, this is what happened to almost all of these. Looks like rusty Chevelles were universal. It was a heck of a toboggan ride.
Yes and to state the obvious, she’s pretty crusty.
RUFF…
If I bought this, I would wonder who is the basket case. Me or the car.
Too far gone for me but I still love a Chevelle and I hope someone will bring it back to the life it deserves. Someone will tackle it.
I have long wondered how you reassemble a car like this one where the parts were not bagged and tagged, and some were likely lost. It must take a tremendous amount of knowledge, skill and time to pull this off.
I could see taking the long haul on this if it were an LS6, LS5 or even an L78 396, but an L34 396, no thanks. The car is not that appealing and it doesn’t have the original engine. Nothing rare about this car.
I just saved a BUNCH OF MONEY, didn’t even switch car insurance. This is a LOT OF $$ for a crusty project without the original engine or transmission? No matter if it’s got paperwork, nothing to prove, anyway! Someone will jump in and be overwhelmed and upside down in a heartbeat.
This car is a bigger POS than the car I bought yesterday!
Because it is a a 70 396…..because it has paperwork….because it is desirable….12K? I think, not! Just look at the the engine block…. it looks like a boat anchor! I don’t think the windshield is repairable!! I know, I know this comment is like Elaine on Seinfeld with her exclamation points, but they are deserved here!!! Someone who has the knowledge… who has the money…. and who has the desire to bring this back….. is the buyer! Good luck….
Again, the dollars are in the legit paper work, validating a SS car. It is VERY RARE to have complete documentation, regarding these cars. The industry has reported there are more 70 Chevelle SS cars on the market or existence, then actually rolled off the assembly line in 1970! Yes she is rough, no denial, but she is a LEGIT Rough SS….taking a second look at her, May not be a bad idea…all parts are available, replace body panels at your own pace and financial ability….
Parts car…. period
i think this was a USA built Chevelle if it were Canada, it should say it right on there. regardless of if it has papers or not it is still non mobile P O S. that will need at a minimum 60k+ to bring it back from the dead. buy 1 done. i see no benefits to buying what’s here except a lot of opening and closing your wallet.
Just another worthless old pile of junk.
Being a 1971 Chevelle owner my self this is barely a parts car and was probably a project set a side over 25 years ago what a shame. Look at the major rust on it. Hard to say that this should be priced below 2k. It has a 12 diff and maybe a ok dash and some other pieces savable.
Let’s start with the positive. That rear bumper can be cleaned up, then move forward??
NICE with my second comment.
I will leave a third comment. Just a rusty old overpriced Chevelle with some extra parts! It’s RUFF like my two dogs say! Move on nothing much to see here!!
Ahhhh….Mark, please listen to yourself….move on…Let it go
Rat Rod!
