Car 25 of 25: 1990 Mercedes 560 SEC AMG Hammer

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

It’s not often you see a Mercedes W126 fetching $150K on eBay with the reserve still unmet. Then again, if it’s an AMG-built car that’s just one of 25 ever made, it starts to make some sense. This is the highly desirable AMG “Hammer” widebody, with features numerous performance and cosmetic enhancements. It has just undergone $50,000 in servicing at the hands of the well-known Mercedes tuner RennTech. With under 40,000 miles from new, this is truly a special car. Find it here on eBay and located in Florida.

The AMG treatment included a widebody kit, monoblock wheels, blacked-out trim and aero enhancements. Despite being somewhat extreme with the flared fenders, the Mercedes is also muted, with just a small lip spoiler on the trunk to announce the performance lying within. The 6.0L V8 pushes out 385 b.h.p. according to the seller, and the engine retains markings indicating it is the final car built, number 25 of 25. In fact, the number 25 is engraved into the heads and the AMG serial number is similarly engraved into the door sills.

The AMG-specific steering wheel, white-faced gauges and extra wood trim were all hallmarks of this drastically upgraded SEC. The seats are ridiculously bolstered and powered Recaros and appear to be in mint condition. The totality of the package really makes this one of the ultimate cars of the 80s, when wide fenders and wider wheels were the norm. The AMG-tuned SEC was part of an extremely exclusive class of vehicles, back in the day when AMG cars were produced in super limited numbers. Today’s AMG vehicles are practically mass produced by comparison.

To me, the best part of an AMG car is the combination of comfort and performance. You’re not trapped in a cabin that feels too cramped or too hot, allowing drivers to experience the zaniness of an 80s tuner car without feeling like they’re subjected to a penalty box in terms of driver comfort. The 560 SEC AMG Hammer is a rare bird and checks a lot of boxes if you grew up watching shows like Miami Vice purely for the automotive eye candy. Anyone think it will clear $175K?

    Over priced for old car.
I would spend on more modern vette or Porsche etc.

It is still an old Mercedes but I guess if you have 150K to drop on an old car, you can have a mechanic on staff.

I had a blacked out SEC for two years and they will always hold a special place in my oil pump. Still, I can’t see spending $150k on a two ton car with less than 400 HP and expect to still be happy.

Of all the cars I’ve seen here on BF,I would take this Mercedes over everything else I’ve seen on this site IMO. I’ve wanted one these for years( even when I was stationed in Germany) and I have owned a 380 SEC and currently may get around to getting my 560 SEC fixed. When you add AMG to a Mercedes you are talking extra money!

These are extremely rare and very special cars. I have a Euro spec 560SEC which I greatly enjoy but if I had the money, this AMG version would be in my garage today. Few cars made at that time came even close to the performance of an AMG 560SEC. If you don’t know what this is, you should not be commenting. Look it up – you will be amazed at its performance numbers.

I think I know what this is. Pretty sure it’s a car. For those who view 150K as a nuissance in their bank account, go for it. You’ll look great getting it dinged up at the country club. If I’m gonna’ get a Merc, the 230, 240, 280s are it for me.

For that money, I would definitely buy the new E class twin turbo wagon.

Unfortunately it is not available in Mexico, and I would probably get killed for driving it.

Look up the performance numbers on our 310R. We bought it for a lot less than 150K. Pretty sure we can beat your block times.

Looks like it has been slammed, or whatever the technical term is for seriously messing with the suspension to make the car look … slammed, I believe the technical term would be.

And $50K in ‘servicing’….. Woah, I can’t afford this, or maybe I just don’t want to afford that kind of servicing.

Back here on planet earth, I remember when the Hammer cars first came out. One of the first ones was a 4-seater IIRC, and there was even a wagon model. I remember getting brochures for the Hammers on ebay, which cost me way less than the cars would have. They looked cool in the beochures, mostly black I think, and without that excessive negative camber.

Then at some point M-B bought AMG and the rest of the M-B vs. M-car wars are history.

As amazing as it was, and still is, my issue (bank account aside) is most onlookers would see it only as a pimped out gangsta wannabe ride. The poser market has somewhat diminished the appreciation and respect for cars of this magnitude.

Thing is, there was no such thing as a “hammer” w126. Only W124.
