Carport Find: 1972 Porsche 911 Targa

It’s amazing how many old-school Porsches still litter the back alleys and private driveways of California. When you consider how often a non-running air-cooled 911 pops up out west, it’s no surprise at all that dealers like Beverly Hills Car Club have made a killing on the Pacific coast. The car shown here has been in the family for a number of years, belonging most recently to his wife who received it as a gift in a previous marriage. Find the 911 here on eBay with a $40,000 Buy-It-Now.

This 911 was posted and quickly taken down and re-listed, making me wonder if the seller went a bit too low the first time on their asking price. They claim to have a working knowledge of cars like these but they are not marque experts; this comes across in the listing. The photos show an old 911 parked in a carport, and the seller notes it was put into storage in 2005 and never used. This is a Targa-style model, which used to be the most unloved Porsche of them all – no longer.

I was actually just thinking I should check out the removable hard-top 911 market on the 964 chassis, but to my surprise, there was just one overpriced example online and no others for sale. A targa-topped 911 was a minor consolation prize if you couldn’t put your hands on a hardtop, so it’s ironic to see such a high price tag placed on a car that just a few years ago was anything but desirable. The bodywork appears decent, but that spoiler has got to go.

The seller claims the engine is original to the car, but as mentioned earlier, air-cooled Porsches are not his forte, so we’d want to do some extra digging to prove the numbers are on the up and up. A matching-numbers, long-hood 911 is a car that deserves to bring real money, and with that in mind, the seller’s ask isn’t unreasonable, especially with the option to make an offer. As a life-long California car, one can hope the rust issues are manageable if not non-existent, and that the floors don’t need to be replaced. Do you think $40K is a fair price to ask for a vintage 911 that hasn’t run in a few years?

That’s one grungy 911 for $40,000. Does it even run, stop, etc.? Love 911s but this one doesn’t stir up any excitement for me.

Homely. LBJ grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. He wanted to be in politics but didn’t have the cash to compete so he did what many of our forefathers did (like George Washington and Abe Lincoln), married into money. LBJ looked for a homely girl with a rich daddy to finance him. He courted both the girl and the daddy. Twice he had convinced non pretty girls to marry him, and twice their daddys stopped it Third time is the charm and Lady Bird married him. Her daddy was so rich he had even bought her a shiny new television station in Texas! (that came in handy) Here is my point. Porsches are the homely girls of the automotive world and they only get suitors because they come with status. If this was a Plymouth or Ford, people would laugh at it.

Homely? Your idea of a good looking vehicle must be a UPS truck.

I remember reading a stat back in the 70s, probably in a R&T, that 50% of all Porsche production was being sold into CA. Makes sense that is where to find them now.

Finding the window stickers to be off putting and undermining the story being sold by the seller. Babied when driven but has a peeing Calvin sticker ( on something that I can’t quite make out). The seller sounds like an older adult but perhaps their kid was running around in this for a time? Take it out. Wash it. Wax it. Then let’s see what we are working with here, please.

As a long time owner of a 1972 911T coupe, I can say without fear of being wrong that if it has no rust, and it has its original drivetrain , that car is worth all of 40k. To top it off it has it still has the MFI on the engine. Contrary to what the author says, Targas are still the undesirable version of the car, but once this car is brought back to its original Gemini blue glory, it will be worth a lot more than 40k.

Guy is trying to get his $$ out after allowing that 911 to be sh-t canned.
