Cat Approved: 1973 Lincoln Continental Town Car

We all need something to strive for when it comes to cars. Before European and Japanese luxury cars infiltrated America, for some people it was owning a Cadillac, Imperial, or Lincoln. Here is a reasonably priced barn find Lincoln still showing its dust. This 1973 Lincoln Continental Town Car (4 door sedan) is for sale here on Craigslist in Clarksville, Tennessee for a firm price of $2,000.

For the most part, the car’s exterior and paint look to be in pretty good condition. Its greatest downfall is that white Calvary Twill vinyl top. I have no idea what it costs to replace a vinyl top these days but it could run a significant percentage of this car’s purchase price. This one also appears to possibly be hiding some rust underneath, which is never good. Someone’s cat has been enjoying resting on this fine Lincoln and has left plenty of paw prints.

In the early seventies, even for luxury makes, few cars had leather seats. The Town Car option, which was a $635 option in 1973, provided seats covered in Victoria velour. They still appear to be in good shape with no rips, but they will need some cleaning. I hope those dark marks are stains and not cigarette burns. The dash appears to be in pretty good shape as well. A Lincoln is expected to have tilt steering wheel, power windows, power seats, power door locks, and air conditioning. The Town Car option also provided front door power mini-vent windows. No word on whether these accessories are still working.

The 460 cubic inch V-8 4 barrel carburetor engine has hauled this 5,260-pound car 77,000 miles. The seller says the Town Car will need a new set of tires and fuel pump to get it back on the road. It will also take a big garage to store it due to its 229.9-inch length. Overall it looks like a solid car with no parts or trim pieces missing. Is this a barn find that you would like to have?

My reply here was deleted because I wrote cat s**t yellow.
….. everyone knows that is the color name. Between that and a six figure British bathtub in a bank lobby I’m out.

Calvary Twill is a religious experience.

Personally, I like it. But I don’t think Mom and my SIL would. Yeah, it
is certainly a gas guzzler, but with the right aftermarket fuel managment
system, you could easily get a grip on that issue–or at least make the
car feasible to drive on a daily basis. Getting things sorted shouldn’t
be that difficult as this car is still relatively simple to repair without
needing a four year degree in auto mechanics or a master’s degree in
computer science. And yes, you can actually tow something with this
car without fear of damaging the CV shafts you find on those god awful
front wheel drive cars we’re stuck with today. Sort it, fix it, and drive it.

Wonder if you could strip off that top and put a wrap on it? Certainly would be more affordable.

Those seats look very comfy. A nice, big, comfortable, safe car, what’s not to love?

Awesome car, love the colour… I’d replace the vinyl top, make it roadworthy and address the rest while I enjoy driving it.

I love my Town Car. A new vinyl carriage roof was $1000 3 years ago… I’d like to have this beauty out front too!

Looks like the getaway car from the movie Charley Varrick back in 1973 but it was set on fire .

Nothing today rides like these Full Size Fords. I had to take my mother out of her ’76 4 door when she started running stop signs and red lights!! She was 90 at the time!! Baby blue, white top & leather interior. Also needs a new top. I was thinking about stripping it off, de-rusting, epoxy priming and repaint it. You’re right, about towing with one of these. A local trailer sales dealer used one of these. Good luck to the new owner and seller.
