Cheap Wheels: 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

General Motors developed the J-Platform in the 1980s as a “world car,” meaning the design would be employed across GM’s global footprint. The Cavalier was such a car, and the third generation alone (1995-2005) saw production reach 2.4 million units. So, a 1998 Cavalier like this one isn’t rare – except when it’s apparently in this condition with only 37,000 miles. Located in Cranston, Rhode Island, this 20th-century econobox is available here on craigslist for $4,499 (from a dealer?). Thanks for the tip, Jack M.

The Cavalier, the second Chevy car to use front-wheel drive, replaced the Monza, which was anything but modern in design. In North America, three generations were produced in the 23 years before 2005, and international production continued for years afterward. Other GM divisions had their version of the Cavalier, such as the Pontiac Sunbird/Sunfire. At one time, the Cavalier practically owned Chevy’s assembly lines in Lordstown, Ohio (which eventually closed).

It’s doubtful that a Cavalier will ever be considered a collectible. There were too many of them made, and they weren’t particularly noteworthy. But one with low mileage in good shape after two decades certainly qualifies for “cheap wheels” if you’re looking for a grocery getter at less than five grand. What’s a bit concerning about the seller’s car is the work that was needed at 37,000 miles – why would such a car need an “all-new front suspension”?

With an inline-4 and an automatic transmission, this car isn’t going to set any records in acceleration. But it should be able to pass up a couple of gas stations. The body, paint, and interior all look good after 28 years, and the seller says the tires and brakes are also “newer”. My daughter had one of these cars when she was a new driver. It seemed like a good vehicle – until she decided to play pinball with it in traffic.

My parents had a few of these. They wrecked two of them. The last one was nothing short of amazing they walked away relatively unhurt. They also rusted badly especially the coupes even in a dry desert climate.
