Chesterfield Brown: 1978 Pontiac Trans Am

The 1970’s were known for wild colors and wild graphics. One color that is making a comeback is brown. One of the most beautiful brown hues was Pontiac’s Chesterfield brown that had a hint of gold metallic in the paint. This car was originally painted this color but years of fading from the sun have not only dulled the paint but left a seared outline of the hood decal! This example is a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am and it is listed here on eBay with 3 days remaining in the auction. The car is located in Denver, North Carolina and is currently bid to $8,100. The Trans Am has been sitting in a barn but the engine is said to still turn over but is non-operable.

The Trans Am was the top performance options for the Firebird in 1978. Engine options included the base L78 Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 180 horsepower, a W72 Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 220 horsepower, and an L80 Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 185 horsepower. The L80 Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 engine was offered in California to meet their stringent emissions requirements. This car has the L78 Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 engine that produced a respectable 315 lb ft of torque.

As can be seen the interior is in rough shape and looks water damaged. The car has the deluxe interior which came with upgraded seats and door panels. Options on this car include power windows, automatic transmission, air conditioning and tilt steering. The seller states the the floor pans and trunk pan will need replacement. You can order the seat covers for this car from Legendary or PUI but it is taking up to 9 months to get an order from some distributors.

The underside of the Trans Am shows a lot of surface rust. It is likely that the brakes and fuel system will need replacement but the seller says the frame rails are solid. The front fenders show rust and rot and the radiator support will need replacement. The car rides on factory 15×7 Rally II wheels. The odometer reading shows almost 58k miles.

as for me, i think the color is one of the best things it has going for it, and id take faded original over a repaint on most any car; the power windows are nice too..
