When you build a vehicle for a long time, there’s usually a point at which the model lineup has to be injected with some new life. It could be a brand new trim line or a set of mechanical components not previously available on lower-tier models. It might take the form of a cheap special edition that comes with some level of celebrity affiliation. Or, it could simply be a mild set of cosmetic tweaks that makes a vehicle growing long-in-the-tooth appear more modern. That’s the case of the XJ-generation Jeep Cherokee Classic, and this clean example listed here on craigslist shows low miles and excellent cosmetics.
The appeal of the Cherokee is well-known by now. Outstanding reliability, dirt-simple mechanicals, a wide range of uses from commuter to rock crawler, and a virtually limitless supply of OEM and aftermarket parts to keep it running. While Jeep was smart not to mess with a good thing, they also realized that the SUV wars were heating up and the Cherokee was looking wildly outdated. Of course, it was also a fork in the road when it came to accepting that the Cherokee in its original form may no longer be relevant in the age of the modern SUV.
The fact that Jeep held on for so long with keeping the Cherokee a fairly sparse offering with no major luxury features or costly upgrades is commendable, to say the least. It also shows you how loyal the Cherokee faithful were, which is why it’s a shame that no equivalent version of the Cherokee exists today in 2026. A simple cloth interior, unkillable 4-speed automatic transmission, dash plastics and controls that will never break, and an appropriate assortment of power and comfort features. Nothing more, nothing less.
The Classic Edition showed a great deal of restraint in simply freshening up the appearance with lots of color-matched trim panels without being gaudy. Jeep also made some attractive alloy wheels available and added some subtle badges. That was it – and it worked incredibly well. The seller of this Classic edition notes he has all the service records and that it has working air conditioning and heat. It’s also never been off-road and in the same family since new, two qualities you will rarely find in a Cherokee of the XJ generation.
