Clean Roller: 1970 International Scout 800A

A lot of the International Scouts that we see here on Barn Finds are pretty rusty and need some major metal repair. This 1970 International Harvester Scout 800A stands out because it is a very clean example that actually looks like a good driver. The only problem is there is no engine under the hood. This Scout is listed for sale here on eBay with less than 24 hours remaining in the auction. It is currently bid to $10,625 and is located in Dallas, Texas.

The first model of the Scout was offered from 1961 to 1965 and was called the Scout 80. The second generation of Scout was called the Scout 800 which was produced in three sub-models (800, 800A, and 800B). From 1966 to 1967, International Harvester produced the Scout 800. Starting in 1968, the Scout 800A (this one) was produced from 1968 to 1970. The Scout 800B had a short production run of only a few months from August 1970 to March 1971. It was replaced by the Scout II which had a 10 year production run from 1971 to 1980. The Scout 800 came with a 196 cubic inch inline 4 cylinder that was introduced in 1966. It was rated at 103 horsepower. However, a buyer could opt for a 232 cubic inch and 258 cubic inch inline 6-cylinder. Also, a 266 cubic inch, 304 cubic inch V8, and a 345 cubic inch V8 engine were equipped in later versions of the Scout. The seller states that this Scout was produced as a V8 model.

The interior of most Scouts is spartan. This one has had the seats recovered and it looks pretty nice. The shifter for the manual transmission is gone since the Scout has no drivetrain. The seller states that new body mounts and tires have been recently installed. The Scout is said to be rust free but the body has a few dents in the front fenders.

It appears to have rally wheels that are similar to GM versions which look pretty good on this Scout. The chassis has been cleaned and painted. This Scout just needs a heart transplant and it should be ready to hit the road. Does anyone have a spare International Harvester engine and transmission?

Wow. I know these rust if you look at them sideways, and this is certainly clean, but 10K for a roller with no engine, transmission or transfer case…just wow

Gotta love Ebay. No VIN listed and no drive train. And the ad says “not regularly driven.”

not so ‘clean’ (judgment I guess) but for its age (50 yrs). This is Y I got my bronk in ’82. The fed law at that time was “only hafta build replacement prts 7 yrs after bankrupcy.” Ford was still around after 5/80 (& went plant stopped 5 mo later). So a choice I still ponder even w/the rediculous $ they’d givem if I sold.

I C the list of motors (nissian diesel SD 32, 33 offered last 2 yrs too the 33 turboed). Back then wages matched products better and options were avail (5, 6 motors; 3, 4 trannies; fast back, notch, sedan, coup, station wagon of same model; etc) to draw out a purchaser’s $. Now the co.s seem to make $ only on the ‘trucks’.
