Clean Slate? 1960 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe

Styling of the 1959 Chevies was radically different than the year before. The tailfins with cat’s eye rear lights made for an interesting look. Things were toned down for the better in 1960, but the car looked as though it was ready to take off from an aircraft carrier. I liked it and apparently, a lot of other people did as Chevrolet sold nearly 1.4 million cars in the first year of the Swinging Sixties. This Impala Sport Coupe, the top-of-the-line Chevy, is a roller that has had some bodywork done but more is needed. Located in Burleson, Texas, the car is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $5,500.

This Impala looks as though it was all red when it left the factory, inside and out. A white top and splashes of white on the sides would have added a lot of character to the car. Since this Impala is largely just a shell now, it gives the buyer a clean slate to work from and maybe they will opt to go that direction. Some of the rust has been taken care of as both rear quarter panels have been patched. But the floors have quite a few holes that may be patched or could warrant new pans. Unfortunately, there is no side glass or window tracks, so that in itself will be a project.

We’re not told what drivetrain once lived in the car, but the seller says it had an automatic transmission. So, a safe bet is that a 283 V8 with a Powerglide lurked there at one time. There is no reference to mileage either, so a placeholder was used. Sport Coupes like this one were popular choices with buyers in 1960 as 15% of production was this body style (204,000 cars). Since the Bel Air wasn’t available that year as a sport coupe, they all had to be Impalas.

There are quite a few of these 2-door ’60 Impalas for sale online and $40,000 seems to be the entry point. One stellar example was priced at over $100,000. So, for the buyer to get into this kind of territory, the quality of the restoration and the choice of drivetrains will be critical. How about a 348 with a 4-speed? The seller has the title for this car and will not part it out. It’s all or nothing, people. BTW, dig all the cool automotive signs all over the garage!

The grill badge indicates 348 power, but someone could have changed that at some previous point. Chevrolet crest = 6 cylinder; Chevrolet crest with gold V = 283; Gold V with crossed flags = 348

The Bel Air did have a Sport Coupe for 1960 but not in 1959.It was(of course) less adorned than the Bel Air.

I for one much prefer the outrageous 59’s from the rear especially the El Camino..this would be as second choice but lots of work and $$$..

The grille AND trunk lid emblems indicate the 348ci engine.

Yep – 348 maybe maybe not – being stripped of everything I would venture to say that’s a selling point – I’ll pass just nothing there for that kind of money. Remember the complete 1959 Impala with a 348 for $6500 a month or so back listed here – also from the Dallas area.

The 1959 model was a much better looking car than the warmed over ‘60
