Cobra Jet Time Capsule: 1969 Shelby GT500 Barn Find

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This unrestored but largely complete 1969 Shelby GT500 is up for grabs here on eBay and located in Indiana. The seller is accepting bids for what they describe as a true barn find that’s been off the road since 2009. With a 428 Cobra Jet under the hood and a 4-speed manual transmission, this car is the real deal—and it’s listed in the Shelby American World Registry.

While not untouched, this GT500 retains much of its original Shelby identity. It’s finished in blue with white interior, and though the seller doesn’t disclose if it’s the factory color combo, it certainly looks correct for the period. The car was purchased from its second owner and reportedly served as a daily driver for a while, which means it’s not a pampered museum piece—but it’s not a rust bucket either. The seller notes some corrosion around the doors and front quarters, which is to be expected from a Midwest survivor that saw snow and salt.

Underneath, things appear solid. The seller calls the floors and torque boxes “good” and gives the car a 7 out of 10 overall. While that kind of rating is always subjective, it suggests this Shelby is better than your average project, especially when you consider how many of these were chopped up or modified over the years. The 428 CJ is reportedly free and turns, but it’s been sitting for 15 years, so it’s safe to assume the mechanicals will need a full go-through before it’s roadworthy again.

Inside, the white vinyl upholstery looks complete, and while it’s described as “a 7,” no photos are included to back up that claim in the listing. We’d want to see that before bidding, but given that many original Shelby interiors were subject to hard use, even a decent driver-level cabin is a bonus here.

One big plus is the car’s inclusion in the Shelby Registry (pages 1081 and 1176), which is a strong indicator of authenticity. The seller won’t disclose the reserve, but for the right buyer, this could be the opportunity to own one of the most iconic muscle cars of the late ’60s in honest barn find condition.

Would you restore this one or drive it as-is and enjoy the patina?

Great car and write-up, but one question: What kind of Offroaders is that listed on the windshield banner?

I’m surprised that a person intellectually challenged enough to think that putting that windshield banner on a vehicle is cool was sophisticated enough to have even heard of Carroll Shelby.

Yeah because window stickers are soooo hard to remove.

Perhaps the owners name was Jack? And he liked off roading.

Reserve not met, if this was me I would spend the time to clean it up a little and get it running again before trying to sell it , would bring more money that way but that’s just me LOL

    At least it’s a manual!

Not for me; I don’t like the huge front overhang.

Imagine it with 5 mph federal bumpers.

Can i assume a ’71 boss 351 stang would be faster than this Shelby?

Maybe that’s one wicked car. Apparently not the most comfortable but I love em.

Love it even with the super size profile, that sports roof to me is ultra cool & a 4 speed to boot! While the 428 is no slouch a 429 would be better just my 2 cents

The 429 was only available in a Mustang in the 1971 model year.

Has the typical “bow” in the hood, but doesn’t appear too bad. Seller will have to prove drive line components match the VIN to fetch top dollar.

Seems there’s a shift in language going on lately with regards to cars that are largely original. Seems the exhaustive use of the word “survivor” is now being replaced by “time capsule.”

Maybe not, but it seems that way to me.

Carry on. Nice car. Looks very “original.”

Something is wrong with my eBay. Every time I click the link to view a car here it brings up the listing for a split second and then goes to the home page. I like this car but the closest I’ll get is a tribute.

With a true classic like this, why wouldn’t you get it running, detail the engine & give it a good bath? The owner states it was a daily driver before parking it 15 years ago. Well then, you had that much time to get those things done. No pride. Just show me the $$$. Shameful. But there’s always one sucker out there for the reserve this car will bring.

It’s possible that the owner knows there are issues that prevent easy recommissioning and would rather let the buyer find that out for himself or herself. I agree with you, if it’d be so easy to get it running again, why wouldn’t you?

Verify the authenticity. Terrible pictures and no certificate of authenticity posted makes it a fake suspect.

Engine shows no signs of being locked? What signs would those be? Does it crank, either by hand or by the key?

    Risky business until vetted.

Rust in the front quarters? Unless that term means something else in another part of the country, around here that means the front fenders. Am I the only one that knows that these cars had fiberglass front fenders?

I see a lot of comments about the car being in ‘as-found’ condition. I’ve had this discussion with a few hobbyists, especially those who purchase & flip said vehicles & they are posted in such a way to verify authenticity. If it were me, I’d have a batch of ‘before’ pics, then give it a good bath & present a bunch of ‘after’. Just my thoughts.

My thing is that it is as found but it was just parked in 2010. So it was 41 years old when it was parked. The chances of it being unmolested in those 41 years is pretty slim considering it was a daily driver. This car was probably “restored” at least once before it was parked. Maybe twice.

Unless this seller advertised this car at an very likeable ask, what was the purpose of advertising this car like this? Sometimes I just don’t understand some seller’s intent.
