Cool Convertible Cruiser: 1966 Dodge Coronet 440

It’s just starting to feel like fall in my neck of the woods, which means there are at least a couple of good months left in the year here to drive around in a convertible with the top down.  While spring might be a more favorable season in most climates to consider buying a droptop, sometimes it’s wise to go ahead and act when the opportunity arises, and this 1966 Dodge Coronet 440 seems like a decent driver at an affordable price.  Barn Finds reader Ted spotted this one recently here on Facebook Marketplace, so we’d like to thank him for sharing this cool Mopar with us!  This B-Body is located in Grafton, Ohio, with the cost of $7,500 sounding reasonable for what we’re seeing here.

Dodge made things a bit confusing when they chose the name Coronet 440 for one of the ’66 offerings, with that number referring to the trim level, not what’s under the hood.  This one has the tried-and-true 318 in the bay, with its 230 HP providing adequate performance for most convertible drivers.  The seller mentions that the small block has recently received a fresh tune-up, including new spark plugs, wires, rotor, and distributor cap, plus a new radiator, thermostat, and brake lines.  He also states that the car starts, stops, and drives well, so hopefully, this one’s mechanically sound enough for plenty of trouble-free nice-weather driving.

Unfortunately, we don’t get a history lesson here, so it’s unknown if any significant bodywork has been performed in the past.  However, there is presently some visible corrosion around the wheel area on the passenger’s quarter, along with smaller sections on the doors near the bottom. The good news is that this all appears repairable without actually replacing the entire components, with another positive being that the trunk pan and floors are stated as solid.

To be white and inside a convertible, the seats have held up fairly well, although some of the vinyl looks to have been replaced in the front.  From what I can tell, the dash is in surprisingly good shape, although the owner states that the top will need a new canvas covering.  I like the fact that this one can be driven as-is while it’s being worked on, and I’d probably take my time and just make some repairs here and there as time permits.  What are your thoughts and ideas regarding this 1966 Dodge Coronet 440 ragtop?

Some underside pics would be helpful but the asking price seems modest for a Coronet drop-top, some room for minimal repair and updates without getting too upside down.

Nice car and perfect set up for top down cruising. Who needs a gas guzzler 440?

The right low beam seems to be set in too far. If one inspects the radiator core support, it is yellow, not red. This could suggest prior body damage and repair. The entire body structure is painted body color at the factory. This support was/is yellow, now painted black.
This car really needs an in person inspection.
    Still the car looks sharp.

I’ve seen it. The car was originally a lime green metallic, the red it’s now wearing is in bad shape, so you’d have to decide which color you like.

According to collectorcarmarket.com it should be worth $9,275 in #4 condition. If it was a #5, it would be about 40 to 50% of the #4 price. If I was looking for a car, I’d take a look at it. It would only be a short drive for me as I live in Grafton.

Wow!, I know of a guy who had a car exactly like this one. Same color, same year, everything. I want this car! Great price.
