Covered Cat: 1969 Mercury Cougar Ragtop

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This is anyone’s guess, but the seller has it listed as a 1969 Mercury Cougar convertible, possibly an XR-7? Who knows, the seller doesn’t even know. They have it listed here on Craigslist and I don’t know if I would fly to Tampa, Florida and attempt to drive this one home. They’re asking $3,500 for this covered cat. Thanks to James M. for sending in this unusual tip!

To paraphrase L. Frank Baum’s story about a rag-tag bunch of ragamuffins tromping down a yellow brick road, “Pay no attention to the car under the curtain.” The seller doesn’t even seem to know exactly what is under this curtain, I mean this rag-tag bunch of tarps. It’s supposedly a 1969 Cougar but they aren’t sure if it’s an XR-7 model or not and you’ll have to be a serious buyer before they’re going to look under the covers. They say, “I’m 44 and to lazy/busy to remove cover or list extra parts, but am willing to if there is any interest in it.”

That’s a Cougar badge showing under the cover and is that the square, left-rear side marker light under the Cougar script? All we know is that it “Belonged to same family since late 70’s. Does not run. Lots of rust. Might be an XR-7.” There are exactly four photos and all four of them are showing either a detail shot of a cover or a car under a cover, that’s it. Four cover shots, so to speak. They do give a few details: “1969 Mercury Cougar convertible. 351 Windsor engine. Automatic with factory ac. Clean Florida title.”

They say that this one has been “Garage kept since 2011. Cover last removed in 2014. Makes a great storage shelf.” I wonder if that’s like me, seeing if I can wear the same shirt for four years. Four years may be a little much for not changing a shirt, but that’s a challenge now. There are no interior photos to talk about the carpets needing a deep cleaning and no photos of a probably-red-hose-adorned 351 Windsor engine to talk about. But, from what I can tell, those are vintage Acme Marine boat covers from the early-1970s and according to Hagerty… No, I have no clue what they are or really what this ad is about but I love the seller’s easy-going attitude. Just think how peaceful the world would be if we were all that laid back. Have any of you stored a car for so long that you don’t even know what it is anymore?

The owner of this car is nothing but a Time Waster. If he thinks he’s building suspense leading upto the unveiling. He’s nuts. I wouldn’t buy this car from the owner for 10 buck’s. Even if it was an XR-7.

What a lazy bastard! I hope he finds a buyer who’d really like to buy the car but can’t be bothered to open his wallet.

Missing passenger side fender front bumper and rust and dirt to help the sale. He did uncover it, but I hope he covers it back up. I’m a GM fan though.

I have always been amused when people cover a car that is riddled with rust! Maybe they are hoping that something magical would happen and all of a sudden, be maticulasly restored when uncovered?

So in boot camp we had a kid, Tony, who was from Bermuda. This amused us. We had never heard of a black kid with a British accent. It was 1981, we were sheltered. The first time EM1 Alto, our Filipino company commander, called one of us a d*ckhead Tony went into hysterics. Quote: “He called him a deekhead!” This guy could quite possibly be a deekhead.

The sellers wife forced him to put in an ad to sell the car, and now he can without lying say:

“-My dear, the car is for sale now, strange nobody is interested”

As stated above there are now photos with the covers off. By the interior the car is an XR-7, the only way to verify this though would be if the seller would post the VIN. I agree that this one is a bit over priced based on what little information is given.

Yeah, too bad it isn’t a belly-button car (y’know, a Camaro, Chevelle or Mustang). People would be beating down his door to buy it at double the price even if it were a completely bare body with twice the rust.

Looks like this one might have been painted White originally? White on White XR-7 convertible… don’t have my CBTN handy, but I’m guessing fairly low production numbers.

Hrmm… conservatively: $20k body and paint, $5k interior work, $5k drivetrain work, $5k miscellaneous, and you end up with a nice car worth $25-30k. Just won’t pencil out, even if it was free :-/

Lots of “needs” and not quite enough “plusses” in its favor. Wish the seller (and buyer?) luck with this one.

Sounds like I’m glad I didn’t see the pics. I’m gonna hope I don’t see what’s under the tarp. I’ll keep the memories of the first mental images I had of it being a convertible GT-E with the 427 side oiler/four speed combo.
