Crazy Custom: 1970 Plymouth Fury Gran Coupe

This 1970 Plymouth Fury Gran Coupe Custom is almost like a 1950s custom. The details could and would work on any car, and it even has fuzzy dice hanging from the rearview mirror.. unfortunately.. Or, depending on how a person feels about a custom like this, maybe those details don’t work on any car? I’m surprised at the low bidding on this Gran Coupe, it appears to be really, really, really nice. It’s listed on eBay with a current bid of under $700, but the reserve isn’t met. There is a buy it now price of $11,495 which would be a big money-loser for whomever did this crazy custom. It’s located in Bohemia, New York and it looks like you could drive it home, if you didn’t mind crowds gathering around it at every gas stop along the way.

Truth be told, I’m normally not a big custom car guy. I like things original or restored to original-spec because it brings me back to the ol’ days when everything was perfect. I mean, other than the weekly crouch under your school desk for nuclear war drills and small things like that.. But, I really like this car. It’s so well done and highly-detailed that I can’t believe the price seems so reasonable. It would be nice to know the back story on this car, how all of these 1950s touches came to be on one of the sleekest, coolest (in my opinion) cars of the late-60s/early-70s. The Fury Gran Coupe was based on the fixed-pillar Fury II coupe and you’ll really need those outside mirrors, there isn’t much of a view out of that tiny, louvered rear window.

That’s a lot of custom work for eleven-grand! Yes, I would prefer a restored to bone-stock 1970 Plymouth Fury Gran Coupe, but that’s just me and, really, who cares what I think? Who’s with me on that?! I thought so, most of you raised your hands, including my wife..

Hey, that’s no fancy, original-spec brocade fabric interior! In the same custom black and red theme, this interior is really a standout. But, the engine is really outstanding!

And, here is that 383 V8 engine. WOW! Eleven grand for this car?! Shut up and take my money! Ok, back to reality, I’m way overbooked, car-wise, if there is such a thing. But, this engine and engine compartment is just ridiculously nice. the standard 383 2-barrel engine for the Gran Coupe would have had 290 hp and the 4-barrel version had a whopping 330 hp. Even the underside of the hood is custom. Nothing was left out of this rolling work of art. Ok, they could have left out the ubiquitous Interstate Battery, ugh. Maybe a black battery or, better yet, moving it to the trunk would have been nice. That thing really sticks out like a sore thumb in this otherwise fantastic, highly-detailed custom creation. Ok, who’s on board with a 1970 car customized in a 1950s theme like this? Does it look wacky on a 1970 car? Would it work on a new Kia?.. Does it even work on a 1950s car? There’ll be a quiz later so answer carefully.

Wow. Just Wow. Not my taste but there’s an a** for every seat. Bidding is going up. And now bidding has ended at US $2,226.00, but no reason given.

Fifties customizing tricks on a 70’s car?!? UGH!, I’m sorry, but as a whole it just doesn’t work for me! The interior, front and rear and engine details are okay. The “carson” top, lakes pipes and cruiser skirts and rear window treatment just don’t flow (IMO). GLWTS
