The Dodge Challenger arrived in 1970 and offered a variety of performance engines. But after 1971, the 383, 440, and 426 Hemi V8s were gone, leaving the 340 small block as the sole hot rod. This 1972 Challenger was built with a routine 318 engine but was treated to a 340 until the Mopar went dormant in 2009. Needing mechanical work as well as cosmetic attention (the front end received a whack), this project is in Bennington, New York, and is available here on craigslist for $25,000. Thanks for the “challenging” tip, Barn Finder Philbo427.
By 1972, sales of the Dodge Challenger had dropped by two-thirds from 77,000 to 26,000 in just two years. That likely signaled the end wasn’t far off as the Challenger represented less than five percent of overall Dodge production. And the end would finally come in April of 1974. Besides the older engine swap (which was rebuilt and tricked out some but who knows when it last ran). The overall vehicle has more than 100,000 miles.
From the factory, this Dodge wore Lemon Twist paint, though we’re told it’s now a tired version of Hemi Orange (doesn’t look like it to me). The interior sounds like it needs help, but here are no photos of it and only three for the whole listing. There is evidence of rust in the photos we are privy to, and it looks like someone backed into the front of the Dodge as it’s a bit crunched (or the driver rear-ended someone else). This car looks like a lot of work and some of our readers will question the asking price.
It scares me. Too rusty. Accident damage. You’d be upside down before you loaded it on your trailer. I will restore a Challenger or ‘Cuda one day but definitely not this one for even a third of the asking price.
No thanks. I read the ad before looking at the 3 pictures and thought it might not be too bad. To say the seller downplayed the issues with this Challenger is an understatement. At least if you are going to overprice something, put in the work and create a good ad. This won’t go anywhere for a while.

Of course the seller downplayed the damage, they’re looking for a sucker, 26k? No no nope. They probably saw all the damage, frame? And are wanting to just move on.
He certainly didn’t downplay the price!
I’d give you 500 bucks to haul it away, but only if the title was sound, and you asked nicely. Don’t forget to say please.
New York New York
🎶 🎙 Start spreading the news, im leaving today … 🎶 🎵
I love the description, look at the trunk lid lip, behind the rear drivers wheel, definitely needs to be inspected.
O brother. Y bother.
I could have been the first to comment yesterday, my mom said if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.
This Challenger is a refreshing change. Not only is it yet another rusted out Mopar (these cars were cheaply made in the day), but it’s got matching body damage..a lot of it! Any Challenger owners here need a pile of parts? Oh, and the price has two too many zeroes.
I don’t know, but I’ve never understood the basis for saying Mopars were cheaply made. Put slicks on a stock 3800# 440/4speed/Dana 60 ’69 Charger and make a thousand passes if you want. Do the same with a stock 3400# 396/M20/12 bolt 69 Camaro and you’re lucky to get 20.
If one is going to ask such large bills at least swap out the hood and the fender. This car hasn’t been started since the hood is wedged in an inoperable position for years. Definitely a rustic vehicle needing love.
It’s a Pile……
My mom said if you can’t pry the hood open to inspect the engine, walk away.
“I know what I got”…………..
That’s a lot of money for a sad mouth Challenger. It’s not a desirable ’70-’71
A New York car with that much rust and damage and that price not a chance.
First of all… it’s in Vermont not New York. Second this seller is looking for a sucker. 3 pictures that’s it!!! Wow!! What are you hiding??!!. This is a excellent example of walk away! Just because it’s a Mopar doesn’t mean Lottery hit!! People like this give the Mopar people a bad name. I could only imagine what the frame and suspension look like! There are plenty of Mopars in better shape for that price. This Mopar back in the day would be worth $500.00. Today $2,500.00 that’s it. I hope people looking for a muscle car today walk away from junk like this. 🐻🇺🇸
love these sellers that sow a few crappy pics. At least $20,000 too much.
No interior pics tells me that side than the outside. Engine ?
He get more for it he just donated it to a charity. Might come out a head as a tax break. Maybe
Somebody gimme $25 so I can get me a nice, orange winter beater.
Nope.
Another offering from the “Dream On Collector Car Club”.
One too many zeros
Sad on many fronts.
One of them is that the car got to this sad state.
Another is the fact that every Mopar E body is priced out of reach of most hobbyists – no matter the condition.
