Custom Chameleon Paint: 1977 Mercury Grand Marquis

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Even if it were bone-stock outside, this 1977 Mercury Grand Marquis would likely be a real head-turner, as it exemplifies everything a personal luxury coupe should be from this bygone era.  However, this one’s received a few custom touches that will make it stand out even more, including a custom paint job that the seller says cost $16,000 to apply.  That single investment is more than the car’s asking price of $15,500, so if you’ve been in the market for an eye-catching seventies land yacht, this one’s probably worth checking out.  Reader Jack M. found this unusual Mercury here on Craigslist in Malden, Massachusetts, and we’d like to thank him for sending us the tip here!

The seller doesn’t reveal what color his Marquis started as, but it doesn’t really matter anymore, as what’s on there now wasn’t one of the choices ever offered by Mercury.  Depending on how the sun hits it, a custom finish that transitions from pearl to green has been applied, which also features gold flakes.  Unfortunately, the angles and lighting from the photo shoot didn’t expose very much shifting.  However, the quality seems to be good overall, plus the sheet metal appears to be straight and in excellent condition, except perhaps for a couple of areas on the Dutchman panel.

The uniqueness outside doesn’t stop with the body, as the wheel covers have also received a treatment that I’m speculating probably wasn’t cheap to perform.  The steel has been turned candy green, which closely matches the other exterior trim, with some additional artwork added.  Those extra-wide whitewall tires were also somewhat popular during this period, and they look right at home here.  No photo is provided of the engine, but there’s good news from under the hood, as this one’s equipped with the optional 460 V8, which was the largest powerplant available here in 1977.

Aside from the flower-print floor mats shown in some of the pictures, many of the interior’s components appear to be stock, which is fine in this case, as the vehicle was already plush and luxurious for this time right from the factory.  There appears to be a small blemish on the dash above the steering wheel, but the condition inside appears quite good for the most part.  Additionally, an upgraded Stereo system, reportedly costing $5,000, has also been installed.  This one seems like a fun cruiser, with the seller valuing it at $40k to him, but he’s looking to try and sell this car quickly.  Any thoughts to share on this bespoke 1977 Mercury Grand Marquis?

The 1977 Grand Marquis, it was near the end of the full-size full-sizers, if you know what I mean. At this time, even a two-door was still available; compare that to now, when almost everything is four-door.

This example looks to be in good shape. It illustrates how customization can be a fickle thing; maybe only you like it. That color-shifting paint might be cool if it fits with the green roof and interior, but from the supplied photographs it is hard to tell. Stock wheel covers with regular whitewalls would be preferable to me. And, more subtle floor mats please. Overall, it’s kind of interesting, I suppose.

Um, wow. Interesting paint, um, VERY custom floor mats and wheel covers. If this were a personal inheritance the wheel covers would come off and the floor mats would cushion them in a deluxe cardboard box that would go….somewhere.
It appears to be in great shape otherwise, though and could be a decent price for the right buyer.
I’d check very closely around the inside however if it smells like patchouli oil when you open the door..

I have to wonder who will be the next caretaker of this and others like it. I can’t see the desirability level being very high especially with the younger generation Honda and BMW camber crowd. They grew up with smaller cars and girls in their 20s today couldn’t handle it like our moms could.

Yes… I was 27 then.. and what a bad coincidence it is that the most luxurious and comfortable cars ever built had the worst engines… ever. That’s because of the Gov’t getting involved in emissions and fuel economy… so the automakers tried all kinds of stuff to comply… some of it ridiculous…. such as the 6-8-4 Cadillac engine…

    There’s a lesson here.

How to screw up a really Kool older land yacht with a $$$ dollar paint job.

I’m out. If my hunting buddy EVER were to see me in something like this…he would shoot me.

Beautiful car apart from the totally green interior which would cause me to throw up soon after getting it up to steam. Pity he didn’t paint the skirts at the same time as the car was painted. Love the wide whites! The only Mercury that I ever owned was a 1956 Monterey and I loved it!

Wow, a traditional big coupe. They truly don’t build them like that anymore. I can handle the paint but wouldn’t duplicate it if I were to fix anything. The wheel covers are the first to go. Probably when I’d ditch those wide whites.

The $40,000 asking price is nowhere near reality. This mercury does have the top line interior though. I see this as an $8000vehicle and no more. But that me.

The green interior is hideous. I agree with Solo I would probably vomit after getting in. 🤮
I was thinking if it were the other way around, green car, beige interior it would be more acceptable. But as ya’ll know I hate green and this green is awful.
Again, Solo caught the same thing I did, the skirts don’t match. $16,000 for a paint job and they forgot the skirts? Yeah, I don’t think so.
Hubcaps and wide whites would be replaced before the car even left the trailer.
Around 1984 before I bought my brand new Camaro Berlinetta I had a 1974 Marquis. Actually loved that car and I don’t care for FoMoCo products. But it had a lot of problems. I heard right after I sold it it blew up. I felt bad for the new owner but there was nothing I could do.
Mine was 70s brown with the beige vinyl top and interior.

Hey (off topic) does anyone remember a company called “Rent-A-Wreck?” Back in the 1980s? Or was that just a New Jersey thing?

Hi Angel, yes I do remember “Rent -a- Wreck but mine was owned and run by a friend of mine in Durban, South Africa. The problem was that he didn’t want to rent out “wrecks” so spent a considerable amount of money on restoring them before hiring them out. The hiring didn’t work out too well either as not many people wanted to hire old cars as for a little bit more they could rent a new car with a/c, radio, leather seats etc. Fortunately he was a very well off man so could afford to close the business down about 2 years later and sell all of the cars at a loss. Such a pity.

Angel Cadillac Queen Diva, I remember “Rent-A-Wreck” and I’m from Iowa. I usually like green but not this green. I also dislike the exterior color, the hubcaps, and the wide whites. If he gave me $1,000.00 I might consider taking it off his hands. Lol

True story , My Uncle ask me for a ride to the dealership to get his new car ,it had come in and was on the show room floor to show it off , the reason he needed a ride was they took has old car in on trade and had a customer hot for it and wanted it right now having a truck to drive he let them have the old car before his new one came in almost a month later , as we walked into the show room to view his new Lincoln ,we spotted what we thought was his new car , we were looking it all over loving it , then the salesman came over and informed us that The Lincoln was over there we were looking at a Mercury Grand Marquis same color , we sure felt foolish ! I wish I had bought the Mercury instead of the Mustang I did buy!

Needs the Uncle Buck treatment. And a hatchet stashed in the trunk. Then you’d have my attention.

These are not even real white-walls- these are cheap white stick-ons, that can damage the rubber and can be dangerous on the long term.
But they would need to go anyhow… same as the floormats.

Its really a pity, that they didnt paint the skirts, as I could live with the paint and the green interior. But I assume, it will be very difficult to match a repaint of the skirts to the new custom paint.
Sorry to say, but for me, this car is a 8K car in this condition, not more.
