Like so many classic cars, this 1972 Cadillac Eldorado convertible in Centerport, New York awaited that glorious day when its faithful owner would apply the healing salve of parts and labor and finally get it into the wind. Sadly the owner passed away before that day arrived, but this one got closer than most! Any given week you’ll find a selection of vintage V8 Eldorados for sale, but this one, offered here on eBay, “starts right up and runs perfect,” according to the late owner’s son. The opening bid of $1500 may be enough to own this specimen of Cadillac’s flagship Eldorado.
Wearing a darker blue re-spray over the original light blue metallic, this ’72 also enjoyed the luxury of a new convertible top three years ago. Other parts replaced in recent years include the CV joints and convertible top mechanism.
At some point the good news had to run out, and likely the old convertible top may have allowed rain water into the passenger compartment, leading to inevitable spread of rust in the car’s lower regions. The seller reports that floor pan replacement panels run about $400.
With 500 cubic inches on tap, smoking the front tires will be no problem if this Caddy runs as good as the seller reports. And yes, that’s right, the Eldorado featured front-wheel-drive beginning in 1967, giving these six-passenger land yachts great foul-weather traction and offering increased passenger leg room by nearly eliminating the center drivetrain tunnel. What would you give for the specimen of Cadillac’s best?
Love these boats.(duh)
Worth saving.(imo)
Well, we know that the windshield or the top (or both) leaked like a sieve. This deserves a thorough bottom side inspection before any thoughts of restoration. Perfect example why you never store a convert (or any other car)outside
Wilma & Betty can use it for their runs to the Bedrock Mall.
Drove one of these back on the day. Great for long trips with plenty of room and that cushy Cadillac ride.
500 inches 1972 a win win
only 4 more yrs till the last cady ‘vert.
Wish I had room for it.
I hate those tops.
Don’t forget the harbor registry fees as well.
I have one of these from 1974. It is truly a fine ride and the 8.2 litre, 500 cu in engine leaves me with the assurance that I have all the power needed to cruise on the highway even with steep inclines. With room to hold six full size adults and their luggage, these beauties were definitely made for the long haul.
I had a ’72 Eldorado coupe that, in spite of many mechanical problems that shouldn’t have happened with a five-year old car, was one of my favorites. It rode like a dream, and that engine was remarkable. It would cruise at 100+ mph with no effort. The front-wheel drive ensured I could get around in all weather, too. One of many cars I wish I still had. A convertible would have been even better.
This Caddy has even more “leg room” a very inexepensive option,
almost free….from GM.
