Dealer Turbo Kit: 1982 BMW 320i

The seller claims this 1981 BMW 320i was found sitting in an Iowa pole barn since 2008. It wears some nice period modifications, including a turbocharger and upgraded suspension. The seller further claims that due to the mods being installed by one of the largest BMW dealers in the country, their reputation makes the enhancements practically as good being installed by the factory. I would debate that point, but we’ll see if bidders agree. Find the 320i here on eBay with a $6K Buy-It-Now.

As a U.S. model, the 320i came with the diminutive 1.8L M10 under the hood. It also sports the tragic U.S.-mandated safety bumpers, along with sidemarker lights drilled into the body. I dig the gold mesh wheels and am shocked not to see a big front air dam attached to the nose, considering that was one of he core mods for this car. The seller notes that it was sold new by Century BMW, which also installed all of the modifications, likely at an owner’s request.

While Callaway is the first name that comes to my mind when thinking about turbocharged E21s, Century was also cranking out these boosted BMWs. A quick Google search on Bimmerforums reveals that many Century Turbo cars have come up for sale over the years and remain quite coveted today. The engine bay looks nice and tidy on this one, with no significant evidence of rodent intrusion or other monkeying around.

The seller notes that when new, it was outfitted with Bilstein shocks, Recaro seats, bigger anti-sway bars and a Momo steering wheel. What gives me pause is that the seller hasn’t provided any photos of those items, and it’s obvious the Recaro seats have already been shanked. I’m guessing this is a case of deliberately not broadcasting that those desirable bits are gone, which absolutely affects the sale price – especially in the case of the seats. Still, it’s a neat car with a nice body and should sell for $5K all day long.

Because it sold “off network” and eBay now redirects you to a similar listing. If you look in the blue headbar, you’ll see a link that will allow you to go to the original listing

I understand that these cars are trouble according to my nephew that owned one his didn’t have a turbo but he never got his straightend out! This thing would be twice the trouble with the turbo I would think anyway!

My buddy had a 320i with a manual trans. I would say it was a pretty decent little car, I can’t ever remember him having any trouble with it?

If it’s anything like an E36, the cooling system is the Achilles heel on these cars. Honestly, cooling has been an issue on every BMW car I’ve ever dealt with. A turbo would certainly make that problem worse. Hopefully the radiator on these cars were up-sized significantly.
