Digital Dash: 1987 Pontiac Trans Am GTA

When it comes to a third-generation Pontiac Trans Am or Chevrolet Camaro, there are tons to pick from when shopping for one. The only way to stand out is to find a car loaded with the best options, and this 1987 Pontiac Trans Am GTA listed here on eBay seems like such a car. It features one of the best color combinations of red over gold BBS wheels and is equipped with a range of options that seemingly check all the boxes. The condition is also quite tidy, and it has under 60,000 original miles. The asking price is $22,995, with the option to make an offer.

This was Pontiac’s golden era of styling, as far as I’m concerned, outside of the 1960s. Of course, as a child of the 80s, I have my biases, but the gold, mesh wheels, subtle body cladding, WS6 suspension options, and even the availability of Recaro seats made the Trans Am the one to buy, in my opinion. Plus, Pontiac got some desirable engine configurations when GM decided to drop the Buick turbo 3.8-liter V-6 into the 20th Anniversary edition. While this isn’t one of those cars, it’s still from a point in time when the Trans Am, along with other Pontiac performance models, seemed to be riding high at GM.

This car doesn’t have the factory Recaros but it does sport some deeply bolstered factory bucket seats that I don’t believe came standard. The seller notes it left the factory with black cloth upholstery, a limited-slip differential, the WS6 Special Performance and Aero packages as well as an upgraded suspension system, the aforementioned 16-inch gold-finished diamond-spoke aluminum wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, and a Delco cassette stereo. Even better, it all appears to be in excellent condition, with no discernable flaws despite having some actual miles on the clock. And speaking of the odometer, it also has the optional digital instrument cluster.

It’s a silly thing, but these very ’80s digital clusters are super cool – and rare to find working. When you pull it all together – along with the 5.7 liter V8 – this Trans Am looks better and better. With 215 horsepower on tap, this Trans Am brought some decent performance to the table as well, although the power ratings would get better as time wore on and the malaise era effectively ended. Still, this Trans Am is a looker, and while I’d personally look for a later production model, there’s no denying that if you shop for 3rd-generation models based purely on options, this one makes a lot of sense.

Always thought the big motor and Hydramatic suited this GTA model best.

As a fan of all Firebirds, this is a favorite era. It’s too old for the LT1/LS1 partisans to argue about & too new for the auction show snobs to care about. Make mine green though.
