Super Nice Driver: 1990 Ford Mustang LX

As someone who owns both modified and nearly-stock vehicles, I can see the argument both ways on why you’d choose one path versus another. I can be somewhat hypocritical on occasion, as I believe the most valuable examples of any car are the unmodified ones, but there’s no denying that a Fox Body Mustang lowered on Cobra wheels just looks awesome. This 1990 LX hatchback comes with under 80,000 original miles, a gorgeous original interior, and an engine compartment described as being 100 percent original. Find it here on eBay where bidding is over $7K with the reserve unmet.

The listing doesn’t mention whether the Mustang has been lowered, but it sure looks like it to me. Even with the larger wheels, it likely have such a small gap between the top of the tire and the fender without an aftermarket suspension. Regardless, it looks good, I just hope the owner chose an upgraded shock like those from Koni or Bilstein. I do wish the tires for the Cobra wheels had a little more meat to them in terms of sidewall, as they look slightly rubber-bandish here.

You have to love interiors that still look this good, and to me this is a major bright spot considering the exterior might lead you to believe the cabin has been trashed like only a teenaged driver can do. Not the case, as the Mustang has clearly been owned by someone who loved it. The red cloth and corresponding carpeting and dash look sharp against the white exterior, and it’s in surprisingly good shape considering the mileage doesn’t exactly make it a true time capsule.

There are other tell-tale signs this Mustang has enjoyed mature ownership, starting with the completely stock engine bay. Other clues include VIN tags still affixed to all body panels, and the only tweak to the exhaust being some upgraded tips rather than a full aftermarket system. Overall, if I’m going to modify a car, I tend to stop exactly where the owner did – with the suspension. Keep everything else neat and tidy, and make it a better driver in the process. I’m curious to see where this one ends up.

I LIKE this one, although personally, I prefer the Pony wheels to these. GLWTA! :-)

I’m with Moparman, I might source a set of pony wheels and sell the Cobra’s. Door pockets still look good. Nice car!

To each their own, but there are probably 20 sets of Pony rims to each set of the ‘93 Cobra rims I’ve seen. The Pony rim is a great rim, but overdone. Nice looking ride!

A nice, clean, unmolested example here, in exceptional condition. While the coupe body style seems to be preferred, I like the hatchbacks. To my eye, they just looked better. I think I’d prefer the Pony rims, too; that would be the only change I’d make here.

T hats a nice fox body. I agree with fordguy, the hatchbacks are a lot nicer looking then the coupe but that’s subjective. It’s nice to see one unmolested. Not to say you need to keep it stock ( although I would) but it’s a nice blank canvas and not destroyed.

A buddy was test driving a new 5.0 in ‘90, and surprisingly the salesman let him and I take it out unescorted (we were 20 at the time)
Taking off from a light he stalled it, restart and stalled again…not enough revs…restart again, only this time gave it some good rpm and dumped the clutch followed by a great burnout – it wasn’t till he went to grab ‘second’ that he realized he was already in third.
Went back to the dealer and bought a (different) one. Still had it last I heard a few years ago.

Hmmm…first of all, it definitely has suspension mods on it, just look at the top of the struts at the shock towers. Looks like it might be lowered too. And aftermarket Cobra style wheels. Look like the ones from LNR. This may be a plus or a minus for a buyer. The panel gaps look a bit off here and there on the front end…

Looks like possibly fake bids; hence, GateWayClassicCars sign on front windshield. I would probably sell my 90 Mustang LX for that price – same color inside and out.

Bidding ended at $10.5K. Don’t know about that?

I was looking at a 90 mustang like this before I got a Monte Carlo because the dealer sold the mustang 2 days before I got my money. But it was two tone with a light gray and a dark gray around the bottom of the car. It had the 302 with a 5 speed manual transmission like this and it had 50k miles on it. It also had the sun roof in it and it also had a different rear spoiler that looked like a wing type of spoiler instead of the style this car has. The car I was looking at also had the fog lights which this car doesn’t have.
