Until recently, this 1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS had been part of the same family since Day One. Its overall presentation carries the hallmarks of a classic that has always been treated respectfully. The fact that the seller claims that it drives like a new car suggests it is a complete package that the buyer could enjoy immediately. They have decided to send the SS to a new home and have listed it here on eBay in McCalla, Alabama. Bidding sits below the reserve at $8,800, although the interest generated suggests the price will climb during the auction’s final days.

The 1988 model year marked the last for Chevrolet’s Fourth Generation Monte Carlo range. The SS variant remained the most popular choice, with 16,204 buyers giving one a new home. The seller indicates that they are this car’s second owner, with the SS remaining part of the same family from Day One until fairly recently. It presents exceptionally well in Code 19 Black, with the paint retaining a mirror shine. The seller states they believe it received a partial cosmetic refresh at some point, but they are unsure when. The panels are as straight as an arrow, and the gaps are tight and consistent. The underside shots confirm the Monte Carlo’s rust-free status, while most of the decals look crisp and clean. It is missing a couple, but replacements are easily found via a spot of online searching. The windows wear a fairly light aftermarket tint, and the distinctive SS wheels look perfect.

Although Chevrolet offered 1988 Monte Carlo SS buyers a long list of factory options, this car’s first owner didn’t go overboard when ordering this classic. They equipped it with air conditioning that still blows ice-cold, cruise control, a leather-wrapped tilt wheel, and an AM/FM radio/cassette player. The listing images confirm that the original stereo has been replaced with a CD player, but I can’t spot any further aftermarket additions. The other thing that becomes apparent as you scroll through the photos is that this interior is in excellent condition for its age. The Saddle cloth trim shows no evidence of significant wear or marks, and there is no obvious damaged or crumbling plastic. However, the carpet could be the star of the show, because it isn’t badly stained or worn beneath the driver’s feet.

Powering this SS is the “HO” version of the 305ci V8. The factory quoted power and torque figures of 180hp and 225 ft/lbs, which feed to the rear wheels via a four-speed 200-4R automatic transmission. Although not a fire-breathing muscle car, the SS’s performance was considered respectable for the era. The seller states that this classic retains its numbers-matching engine, and that a recent transmission rebuild included fitting a shift kit. They confirm that the car recently received new tires and a pair of new mufflers, but retains its factory catalytic converter and smog equipment. The SS runs and drives like a new car, with no mechanical problems or shortcomings.

Many enthusiasts find the concept of a turnkey classic with a known history irresistible, and this 1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS ticks those boxes. Locating a correct stereo to replace the existing CD player would be easy, returning the interior to its factory form. Alternatively, the winning bidder could leave the car as-is, enjoying all that it offers in its current form. The Watch List tally is impressive, suggesting that people like what they see. It will be interesting to discover whether the action intensifies in the final hours, and whether any Barn Finds readers are tempted to pursue this SS further.

Looks good w the decals it has to me. Hop in and drive it 😎 👍
Sweet looking Monte SS. Nice color on the interior also!
It’s nice to see a SS Monte Carlo that hasn’t been ruined by a lot of backyard modifications.
I agree with that comment!!
One of the best looking cars of the era.
What a sharp looking Monte SS! The saddle interior is what sets this one apart. That color combo is one of the nicest as far as Monte SS’s of that era goes in my opinion. You could also get White with saddle as well. Ive had a few Monte SS’s and they all have had the burgundy interior which isn’t horrible, just very common. No mods, not a race car, just a super enjoyable car to cruise in!
Agree with the comments above! This is also my favorite color combination. Surprised to see manual window cranks! Performance for the time (yeah I remember and had an ’87) was respectable – as long as you didn’t push it too hard. Memories of watching a similar looking, and only a year old, Monte SS grenade it’s rear end at the line at Englishtown; Axles sticking out, fluid all over the line… Ouch! So yeah, super enjoyable car to cruise in, occasional stop light challenge, and car shows.
Rarest color combo and I believe available only in 87 and 88, which are the same exact car. Monte SS production ended Dec. 16, 1987. I had an every option clarey ovet claret 88 from 1991 to 1993. Miss that car. Had 36,000 miles. Sold for $9,300. Guy I sold it to still has it.
had a bunch in this combo when they could be bought right. looks good. if i were buying i would want that title because most states consider that paper legal ownership. curious to see if it meets reserve
Rairest of the color combos, besides the blue ones. .Just didn’t like the furry door panels of these years always seamed to wear weird.
