When it comes to AMCs, most of us know by now the Spirit hatchback was the benefactor of performance packages designed to improve the looks and handling abilities of the standard model. The AMX trim gets all the glory for its limited production and in-your-face styling, but there was also a GT edition that offered similar visual enhancements and chassis improvements for less money. This is one of those cars, a 1983 AMC Spirit GT, listed here on Facebook Marketplace as a running barn find with the preferred five-speed manual transmission and an asking price of $6,500.
The GT trim was fairly close to an AMX in terms of equipment offerings, getting a similar rear spoiler and racier blacked-out trim treatments. The GT would have left the factory with a unique exhaust system as well, designed to enhance the aural pleasures of the inline-six powerplant. The seller doesn’t include any details about how original the AMC remains, but there were plenty of other improvements included as part of the GT package: sport-tuned suspension, front and rear sway bars, adjustable shocks, heavy-duty brakes, and quicker steering rounded out an impressive list of upgrades.
The enhancements extended to the cockpit as well, featuring a leather-wrapped steering wheel and additional gauges. Unique wheels were also part of the package, bolted to radial tires. I’d forgotten just how much equipment AMC threw at its otherwise plain-jane hatchback that was built to achieve respectable fuel economy, not outperform Ford’s new Fox body Mustang. Truthfully, I’d love to see that showdown today, especially with two manual transmission cars. It’s easy to find a Fox platform GT with the row-it-yourself option; far less likely with an AMC Spirit GT. It’s not cheap for a project, but there also can’t be many left in this specification.
Is it too much to expect at least ONE engine picture, and ONE interior picture?? This looks like it could be a good project, but the seller does themselves a disservice y not including pictures of ALL aspects of the vehicle.
GLWTS! :-)
Why not go crazy and raise it up on the hoist it’s already sitting on and let us see the bottom as well.
Could have at least washed it.
But washing it kills that “genuine” barn vibe. Lol. Too much money for too little cool. IMHO
I am no expert, but I don’t see $6,500 sitting here. That said, I have only ever seen one of these “in the wild”, it was in a bone-yard. It was complete, same color as this one over a black interior, and it was a five speed (which is why I was interested in picking it up.) The yard manager wanted $300, which will give an indication as to how long ago it really was.
I owned a 82 Spirit GT that was black on black. Really nice little car that was a LOT of fun. I bought that car new. I don’t see him getting $6500 either.
I love it. Reminds me of Dad’s 79 concord wagon. No idea of its “value” but if I had it, I’d buy it
A good detailing and if it runs well and doesn’t need much work, the price is in the ballpark, but we don’t know enough about the condition.
