Drop-Top Project: 1968 Chevrolet Camaro

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Camaro was in its second year in 1968 as Chevy’s countermeasure to Ford’s highly successful Mustang pony car. More than 20,000 convertibles were built that year, which would have included the seller’s project car. We’re told it was being restored when the owner got sick and couldn’t proceed, but that was likely some time ago. The front clip and the rest of the car have gotten separated and are in different places now. Located in Ridgeland, South Carolina, the two halves of this Camaro are available here on Facebook Marketplace for $18,000.

There is no indication that this Camaro was out-of-the-ordinary, i.e. either a Super Sport or a Rally Sport. We’re told it came with a 327 cubic-inch V8 and a 3-speed manual transmission, but neither are in the car nor the limited photos provided. The seller says the sheet metal and body are good but the floor pans are going to need work.

The top is down (or gone), so the interior has been exposed to the elements. Though the trailer the back half of the car rests on is under a cover, it looks to have been there a long time given the stuff accumulated around it. I’d want more details and photos before making a trip to the Carolinas to check it out.

“More than 20,000 convertibles were built that year.”

Are you kidding me? I sold my 1968 Camaro convertible in 1980 for $800. AND the guy drove it home. I should have parked it for 40+ years as an investment.

You would think the guy would at least clear the vegetation thats growing up thru the frame. Looking for maximum dollars for minimum work. Good luck.

He is gonna be wanting that sum of money for a long time. Like long after he’s dead long time. The thing to do would be to go down there and check out the car and see what is actually there. Then meet the wife and kids, get their contact info. Then wait for that dude to pass away. Cause he just made that car sale proof at that price.
