Drop-Top Project: 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

In its seventh year, the Chevelle would continue to be a big seller for GM. Excluding the new Monte Carlo personal luxury car, upwards of a half-million of the autos would leave Chevy factories. That included the seller’s 1970 Malibu convertible that has a couple of SS emblems but nothing else to suggest it was ever a Super Sport. Without a drivetrain and a lot of cosmetic attention required, this Chevy can be found in Sugarfoot, Pennsylvania, and is available here on eBay for $16,800. If this is too rich for your blood, you can submit an offer as well.

In fairness to the seller, no claim is made that this is a drop-top SS. It still wears fender lettering that says it had a 350 V8 when new, whereas the Super Sport only came with a 396 or 454 that year. With a great deal of vision, you could turn this into a $125,000 LS6/4-speed Chevrolet (as per the seller), but it will take a lot of time, effort, and money to get there.

When new, this convertible – one of 7,522 – was painted red with a matching interior and a white top. Due in part to the car having sat outside for years, the paint is shot, and the sheet metal is dented and has a lot of rust. It will need rear quarter panels, floorboards, and a trunk pan, at a minimum. The cowl hood is from an SS model so any planned transformation to a Super Sport has a slight head start.

The interior has been exposed to the elements, so very little looks to be salvageable there. It was a bucket seat car when new with a column-shifted automatic transmission, probably a TH-350. But it has its original 12-bolt rear end still in place. Somewhere along the way, this convertible has found a set of SS 14-inch wheels. The car can be loaded onto a trailer for shipping but be careful as the brakes are not functioning (no master cylinder). Is this a project you would take on and what would be your top dollar to take this car home?

16k? I won’t even say anything about the rat-infested interior…wait, I just did. Happy holidays!

Only makes sense as an SS clone, which I fear might happen :-(

Drop top? I’d drop it off a cliff.
There are 138 watchers, probably waiting to see if anyone will pay $16,800.

Somebody stop the madness…needing everything for $16,800 to start. Wow! That kind of money can buy a nice driver musclecar. This is a long way from being back on the road, and not by way of trailer.

Would have been a sharp looker when new, not the rolling (barely) tetanus incubator it is

I recently found a 72 Malibu convertible for $5k on FB, guy said I could buy it, then no contact. Tells me 2 days later he had 2 guys that bid it up to $7500. This looks like a red 70 vert I bought out of a field in 1983 for $125, patched the floor behind the bench seat, put 2 nicer fenders and a new top on it, as well as 4 barrel carb/intake and headers. Got a job out of town and needed a fuel efficient car, sold it for $650. The good old days, when your job didn’t suck, and your wife did.

Seems like everybody is digging up old Cheveles no matter what the condition and slapping big numbers on them compared to the shape they are in. C’mon man! That thing needs EVERYTHING to get it in shape, you’d probably spend well over $100k to restore a Malibu??

A lot of people who have an OLD BEAT up muscle car seem to think that they should get an arm and a leg for it. A great car if in decent condition but this one requires too much work. I see this car priced at 5k and I’m not being sarcastic
