Droptop Project: 1971 Pontiac Le Mans Sport Convertible

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Pontiac Motor Division produced the LeMans model from 1961 to 1981 for US production and from 1961 to 1983 in Canada. this example is the third generation of the LeMans and is listed here on eBay. There are 4 days remaining in the auction and the high bid is currently $4,161. The car is a project with mismatch paint and in need of mechanical and cosmetic work. This Convertible Pontiac LeMans is located in Indianapolis, Indiana. There were 3,865 Pontiac LeMans Sport Convertibles built in 1971.

The interior has been stripped except the dash. Pictures in the ad show the floor pans without the seats. The front and rear seats come with the purchase and are installed. There is surface rust throughout the interior and a hole is evident in the driver side floor pan but not near as bad as some cars we have seen. The seller has purchased a convertible GTO and is moving on to that project. He or she originally planned to do an LS swap on this car. It was fairly well equipped from the factory with factory air, power top, air conditioning, power windows, power steering and power brakes.

Under the hood is a non running Pontiac 350 cubic inch V8 engine. The engine is fed through a 2 barrel carburetor and backed by a GM 3 speed automatic transmission. The seller states that the engine did not run when he or she purchased it.The base engine in the LeMans in 1971 was a 250 cubic inch inline 6 cylinder engine. Optional engines included the 350, 400 and 455 cubic inch motors. All 1971 engines were detuned to run on lower octane regular gas.

The exterior looks pretty solid and the LeMans comes with 5 Rally II factory wheels. The front fenders and hood have been replaced. The paint is not matching and the front bumper and grill are blacked out. These A body cars are some of the best looking intermediate cars produced. I owned a 1972 Pontiac Luxury LeMans and it drove and handled well. I hope this one makes it back on the road soon.

I bet the owner’s will to live evaporated when he first saw the car sitting outside his brother’s secretary’s boyfriend’s grandmother’s detached garage with the front clip painted 30 shades darker than the rest of the car.

The interior looks nice except for the Fred Flintstone floor pan. Body looks straight and maybe rust free. The price is a steal.
