Dusty Time Capsule: 1969 Plymouth Fury VIP

Full-size Mopars from the late 1960s don’t always get the attention they deserve, but this 1969 Plymouth Fury VIP, listed here on Facebook Marketplace in [location not specified], offers an opportunity to bring one of these rarely seen luxury-oriented Plymouths back to life. Showing 64,501 miles on the odometer, the car has been sitting for about 15 years and will need a complete restoration, but it appears to be a fairly solid and complete project with good bones. The Fury VIP was positioned as the most upscale offering in Plymouth’s full-size lineup, bridging the gap between affordability and comfort. This example wears a green exterior with a matching green interior, a very period-correct combination. While covered in years of dust, the body panels look reasonably straight in the photos, and much of the original trim and brightwork seems intact.

Under the hood, the seller notes that the engine does crank, but further details on condition or originality aren’t provided. Given the long period of storage, the fuel system, brakes, and all mechanical components will need to be gone through before the car can safely return to the road. That said, the fact that the engine still turns over is a positive sign for any restorer looking for a manageable starting point.

Inside, the Fury VIP offered more upscale appointments than the standard Fury, including upgraded upholstery, additional trim, and optional comfort features. Although there aren’t many clear shots of the interior, the seller states that the car is complete, and from what can be seen, much of the original equipment is still present. The matching green interior is a rare survivor detail that should look sharp once restored.

With its big-car presence, luxury leanings, and relative rarity compared to Plymouth’s muscle car siblings, the Fury VIP stands out as an unusual Mopar project. For someone seeking a different flavor of late-’60s Plymouth, this dusty time capsule could make an excellent foundation for either a full restoration or even a custom build.

    This is one of my favorite years of a Fury,
    and yes,it should have pictures after it’s been
    cleaned up.

    I like it, but C-bodies aren’t the stuff of classic restorations. And, for less money than a restoration (a lot less) nice fuselage C-bodies can be easily found.

    But they make great cheap fixer-upper cruisers and daily drivers if priced right.

    It’s a complete car with A/C. Should be washed with after pictures as we have seen the before. Maybe 2000 dollars a starting price and have a weekend cruiser!

    A “VIP” ( whistles), I can just see the poor schmoe in the mail room, finally saves up enough to buy a “VIP”. Well, he had to keep up with the neighbor that bought a Pontiac “Executive”. Another in the “5 digit” odometer kerfuffle, no way 1st time around, and something sidelined it. I wouldn’t even yank the motor, and just take ‘er away, boys, and where’s my check for $300?

    Unlike the LTD and Caprice, Plymouth didn’t make these much more distinctive than the Fury III. Hence, they sold in low numbers and are more rare. Baseline 318 and no power options don’t help this one.

    Please, wont someone save Chrysler? I grew up with Chrysler products. Now all they make is one ugly minivan. And it’s not even small. Stellantis will destroy Chrysler and Dodge. Plymouth was destroyed by Mercedes Benz. I want to see Plymouth again. I want to see Chrysler again. I want to see Dodge again. I want to see each of these divisions with a full line of automobiles and trucks. Stellantis is European and all they can see are electric vehicles. Their European brands have never sold well in the United States. Please, wont someone save Chrysler?

      In my opinion Chryslers been dead for decades. What you have now is just an Italian company with a Chrysler nameplate on it. Loved them all too and miss them, but they ain’t commin back.

    I had to laugh as I scrolled through the BARNFINDS site this afternoon, as immediately after this ad is a Mercury Comet S-22, that reminded me there was a “performance” version of the Fury labeled a S-23. Now the Mercury name made sense to me, as the deluxe big bruiser Merc was called the S-55, the intermediate Meteor was called a S-33, and the little Comet was the S-22. S-23(?), that’s a mystery to me, maybe Chrysler fan Dave Brown can explain it. Personally, if I were shopping for a car during this period, my aim would have been a 1969-70 Mercury Marauder X-100.

    ’69 Fury…. available with 318, 383, 440. I’m not sure, I don’t think the VIP contained any special engine packages. I almost bought one locally for $3500.00 running and driving with A/C and original cruise control fully functioning
