Equine Survivor: 1972 Maverick

If you like early 70’s Fords, you won’t find many nicer survivors than this one. It appears we have a run of nice Mavericks lately! This one is located in Henderson, Maryland and is listed for sale here on eBay. These folks think a lot of their Maverick, as they are asking $10,500 or best offer. It might just be worth it!

Short of some minor paint wear on some seams around the hood opening, I really don’t find much to fault with the largely original paint on this Maverick–as a matter of fact, I can’t find much to fault with the cosmetics on this 56,343 mile survivor at all, apart from that I’ve never cared for this particular style of wheel cover.

Yes, it’s a rather plain car, but when is the last time (other than on this website) you’ve seen another one this original and nice? And the yellow is so 1970’s. As best as I can tell from color charts, this has the inspiring name of Medium Bright Yellow. What happened to the folks that came up with Grabber Blue?

Apart from the Mustang floor mats (which don’t look bad) and the aftermarket steering wheel cover, this is a beautiful interior. Ok, this is as beautiful as a non-Grabber Maverick interior gets. I actually kind of like the padded shelf under everything; that would be useful. It’s all original, you know. Sure does look like it’s been taken care of.

The 302 V8 is original as well. It looks darned nice as well. I’d have to go with something more original looking than the red spark plug wires, but that’s being really nitpicky. The only thing that puzzles me a little is where the yellow seems to be a slightly different shade in some places. I’m hoping that’s just the light. Regardless, this really is a nice, V8 Maverick. Just think what it would cost if it were a Mustang in this condition? What are your thoughts?

    Nice Maverick but got to agree the wheels are horrible, the price a little steep for a Maverick but at least they will consider offers.

    That’s a really nice Maverick. I always liked small bumper cars. Might piss some people off but I would turn it into a grabber tribute. You could always put it back to stock later if you wanted, and it would sure improve it’s appeal to most. Maybe a grabber hood, magnum 500’s and a 4 barrel…….

    almost as nice as a maverick will ever get! it has the LDO or luxury decor option and the 302!
    my grandma had a 70 Maverick with the ultra rare but not desirable semi-automatic tranny. any one ever seen that option? don’t believe me google it.

    The spark plug wires are probably Autolite items…they were an orange color.Nice Maverick.

    I have a red and white ‘Spring Special’ Maverick I bought from the original owner ( 92 year old widower and dressmaker in Las Vegas ). 302, auto, magnum 500s, air con., with a radio delete. She ordered out the car this way because she didn’t like the distraction of the radio at stop lights……it cost just under $4,000 new. I have shown the car at vintage car shows and it always draws comments and admirers; it’s all original with 19,000 miles and has perfect red cloth interior with all original paint, chrome, and even the wheels and glass ! I have been offered FAR more than what these folks are asking, but have never considered selling. After all; who saved a Maverick ? Who thought they would one day be cool ? ( well, I did….. & have owned it since 1988 )

    The LDO option is less-desirable than most other Maverick trim levels, but it’s Yellow and it’s MINT! These cars aren’t getting any cheaper! They are quickly gaining popularity and with that comes a premium.

    But then, I’m a little partial to Yellow Mavericks! My 71 Grabber still has the original paint and only has 23,000 miles on it at the moment. And yes, it’s a 6-cyl, but I don’t care.

    Buying a super-condition car for $10,000 is by far money well spent instead of chasing rust and redoing everything for close to twice that. JMHO.

    What a beautiful original Maverick. I always wished Ford would have built a Boss 302 version. This may be the ultimate platform to build your own. On second thought, I’d hate to modify such a nice survivor. My brother had a similar 302 automatic Maverick. It would turn tires into smoke without breaking a sweat.

    I never liked them new, but these have grown on me. Two doors, V8 and like new. Why not? I’m with the guys who think $10k for this is cheap. Not my money, mind you, but if someone else purchases it, I will praise their smarts.

    I used to have a 6 cylinder car, didn’t care for that buzzy motor, but worst still was the aweful ride, you could feel every bump. Never cared for the looks either and still don’t, it all reads cheap car to me. Maybe if it had a V8 I would have liked it more? Anyhow, I happen to love those Torino hubcaps…

    When I was about 15 a family up the block had a comet same color combo . It was the mom’s car the son took it out for a drive one day I was riding with him and he decided to pull the e brake at 40 mph what a dope . The good old days lol

    It reminds me of a time when my dad should of beat me senseless. It was 1971 and the 72 models just came out. Dad wanted a mustang but was out of his budget. He liked a red 302 maverick. They had a yellow 6 cylinder there. I liked it better and had a tantrum over him buying the yellow one. He bought the yellow one to shut me up. He never liked that car and as soon as he could unload it. He did. As a father now and a grandfather he was a bigger man than I could have been for sure. I would of beat my but told the salesman I’ll be back. Took me and my mother home. Then came back and bought what I wanted. As I look back on it I realized what a selfish brat I was.

    These were popular drag cars on the strip before the fox body came along. They really hooked up well. Our shop campaigned a maverick at Ca. Fremont Raceway with great success. I would love to build a Mav racer but this one is too nice to cut up. And Yes, lose those grandma wheels…

    These cars are pretty affordable by today’s standards. My sister’s first car was a Maverick. She couldn’t drive it because it was a 3 speed on the column with the 302 V-8. I remember picking that car up at the dealership for her and teaching her how to drive a 3 speed. When you dropped that clutch it was pretty impressive the way that little car took off when you smashed the pedal. My fun ended once she learned to drive it and wouldn’t let me borrow it anymore.

    These mavericks equipped with the 302 moved around pretty well even during the emissions era. I had a 1975 granAda with one and it whipped around pretty good for my expectations, even at 122 horsepower.
