Extra Lively: 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

In the 1960s, the Galaxie 500XL was Ford’s equivalent to the Chevy Impala Super Sport. And, in typical fashion, Ford sold fewer of them than Chevrolet (that’s until the Mustang came along and sent everyone scrambling). This ’64 500XL looks to have been sitting for a while in what once may have been a gas station parking lot. It has a Z-code V8 and needs loads of attention. From Santa Ana, California, this former proud cruiser is available here on craigslist for $4,000. Thanks for the tip, “numskal” and bring a trailer!

The Galaxie 500XL joined the lineup in 1962 and Ford promotional material was referred to as “extra lively” (hence the name). It was the premium car in the full-size Ford portfolio through 1964, after which the LTD was added to put more emphasis on luxury (at which point, Chevy had to do the catching up with its 1965 Caprice). Ordering the XL got you goodies like front bucket seats, a center console, and spinner wheel covers. Unlike Chevy, it seems unlikely that you could get an XL with anything other than V8 power.

In 1964, Ford sold about six XLs to every 10 of the Impala SS. You had your choice between the fastback or convertible, of which the former dominated production. We don’t know the history of the seller’s car, although we’re told that what’s left of the red paint is thought to be original. There is rust, especially in the passenger’s side quarter panel and the trunk floor, but the seller is throwing in a quarter panel to get the repair work started. We’re not sure about the floors, although the carpet is out and they’re somewhat visible. The seller says the frame is fine.

This Ford has a Z-code 390 cubic inch V8, which was a step below the potent 427 that was also available in 1964. It’s paired with a Cruise-0-Matic automatic transmission (floor-shifted). Though the motor will turn over (no battery!), the Ford does not run, and we don’t know when it last did. The odometer reading is 89,000 miles and that could be right if the car has been down for a long time. There is no title, so a bill of sale with have to suffice and we’re told the project has been out of the California DMV system for some time. Looking at the car, can you imagine what once was?

There’s one of these about a mile away from my house. In a little better shape. I’m trying NOT to go and check it out. My willpower is shaky.

This is in such poor condition it even has a rock to keep it from rolling away on flat tires. I would be ashamed to have that POS anywhere near where I was at. $4000, they should be offering that to haul it away, NO THANKS!
