Farm Find: 1970 Buick GS 455 Stage 1

The owner of this Buick GS 455 refers to it as a numbers-matching car with, in his own words, a “crap paint job.” That does seem like a pretty fair assessment, but it still makes this a very desirable car that seems to only require some light restoration work. If it is a car that grabs your imagination, you will find it located in Illinois, and listed for sale here on eBay.

Yep, the paint job on the Buick is pretty ordinary, but looking around the car, it does appear to be really solid. Any potential rust seems to be confined to a couple of small spots on the passenger side of the car, and when I say small, I really do mean small. It looks like there is a small spot in the bottom corner of the door, and a single spot in the very bottom of the quarter panel on the same side. The rest of the car really does look pretty good.

Under the hood is the 455ci V8, and in this case, it is backed by a Muncie M-22 transmission. The owner says that the car runs smooth and strong. There has always been a bit of conjecture about the power output of the Stage 1 455 engine, but it does appear that Buick’s claim of 360hp seems to be pretty close to the mark. It is still enough to allow the GS 455 to cover the ¼ mile in around 13.4 seconds, which is pretty fast in anyone’s book.

The interior of the Buick is in pretty fair condition, and I think that a serious clean would make the world of difference to the appearance. The floor console has been modified with the addition of aftermarket gauges, but the car will come with a replacement console and vinyl top, so that’s one problem solved. There is some wear on the wheel, and the kick-panels in the front foot-well look a bit ratty, but there is a lot of promise there.

This Buick is a car that is very desirable, and it really doesn’t need a lot to make it really shine. There are obviously a few people out there who feel the same way that I do. Bidding on the car has been very strong, with 20 individuals submitting a total of 54 bids on the car. At the time of writing, bidding has reached $24,500, and with the reserve having been met, someone is about to land themselves a pretty special car.

Big block Buicks with four speeds are super rare. I’m not too surprised at the bidding on this. I wish that I had some extra coin so that I could join in.

Assuming that this is owned by the same guy that owns that big J D in the back ground, can’t imagine why he would want to sell it.Nothing spells stress relief at the end of a long day spent inside a cab doing 6-mph like grabbing that 4-speed stick and giving it a good work out. Looks like this Buick could be just the ticket.

Lol. I own a JD H, Mt, and 50. Different category than the 200k tractor in the background. Still a big grin.

I had a 1970 gs 350 stock with 80k miles and ac. Ran it on the track I did 13.1 and let off at the end because I knew I was going to break out of my bracket. I would imagine this could do more

I’m sorry I’m going to have to throw the ‘BS Flag’ on this one. There is no way a ‘stock’ ’70 GS 350 will run 13.1 in the 1/4 mile.

I had a ’70 GS 350 with a factory 4 speed. I redid the motor with a larger cam, TA Performance aluminum intake, reworked Q-Jet, headers, 2 1/2″ exhaust, electronic ignition, 3.55 posi rear. With a set of Hoosier tires it ran a best time of 12.95.

neat car, but the M-22 claim should be highlighted if so equipped! hard to believe they didn’t make disc brakes a mandatory option for this beast. if it would hook up it would be gone!

An acquaintance of mine has a convertible one of these that is immaculate and of the same color. I swear there seems to be an inordinate number of brown 1970 Buick Skylarks remaining in this world. Does anybody else notice this? He let me drive it once, man those things move and are a riot to drive. If you haven’t driven one, you need to treat yourself to the experience. But then again, after driving it, you are going to want one.

This is the one that leaves the LS6 in second place; value?

The Buick 455 also has a weight advantage vs the LS6 454. The 455 is ~160lbs lighter. The Buick 455 is only 90lbs heavier than a Chevy 350. But I think the 455 cylinder walls are thinner than the 454 so it cannot be rebuilt as many times as the other 2 Chevy blocks.

Nice ride, well, nice in my book anyways.
Magazines were known to fiddle with these cars back then so track times may vary, one things for sure these Stage 1 Buicks were bad news!

I agree, nice car. Wasn’t so much the magazines. The factory or dealer would send them ringers, blueprinted etc. I would think they still do it. Motorcycles also. That is what makes us want to buy the products.

Aside from the ambiguity of this auction: I.E. lousy pictures, half assed description, etc., this could be a cool grab for someone who wants to do a tune up and go. Hell, I’d drive the crap out of this just as you see it!

Of course, this is coming from someone lucky enough to own this same car but in double black, so I may be a bit biased. :-)

it does have 360 hp …. the only one with more hp was the the 70 Buick Riviera G S with 370

That 360 hp was underrated for insurance purposes. It was closer to 380 – 390 but it was all about the tourque with these cars.

32K now, WTF? One just sold at Mecum that was way cleaner, and I mean way cleaner than this. Cheaper to buy them already done.

Anyone want to guess the value of that tractor in the background? I’d venture to say MORE than the value of your current domicile .
