Feeling Dirty: 1973 Cougar Convertible

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

There are many reasons why we might find a car interesting and want to write about it. When I saw what Doug M had submitted and his comment “The ad makes you feel dirty!” I had to read the ad. Have a look, here on craigslist, I think you’ll agree with him! Thanks Doug! Even it’s location, Flowery Branch, Georgia, continues the theme. The pictures make this second generation Cougar look really nice, but I’m thinking his $19,500 is just part of his fantasy about his car without a title and with 114,000 miles. For example, a nicer looking 1973 XR7 convertible with a title and similar miles was for sale last month on eBay for $15,000 and bidding only got up to $9,700. This was the last year of the Mustang based Cougar. The engine is a 351, likely the 168 horsepower version with an automatic transmission.

The interior looks nice in this picture. You have to wonder what the seller is hiding in these selective photographs.

Here we have a peek at the dash, but notice the seller has avoided showing the top of the dash but those two gauges look like the ones in an XR7…

Cars over the age of 25 are not required to have a title in the state of Georgia; however, you CAN get one if so desired. The Cougar is also well over the “age of consent”, LOL!! :-)

Yeah, it’s CL alright. Pretty creepy. Nicest Cougar to come through here. Missing title scares me. The whole thing scares me. I know getting a title isn’t the end of the world, but, a title, to me, proves ownership, anyone can make out a bill of sale. Anybody? Very nice car.

This whole “bill of sale” thing concerns me. Looking up on
      http://www.dmv.org/bill-of-sale.php#Do-You-Need-a-Bill-of-Sale
it claims a bill of sale does NOT prove ownership, only a title transfer does that. You can check your own state for details. Pretty sure, a “bill of sale” as ownership, doesn’t fly in Wisconsin. Of the hundreds of vehicles I’ve bought,( except dirt bikes) I had a title for everyone, or the deal was off.

In Alabama and Georgia, cars this age do not have a title. I know some of you from other states are concerned about that. But it’s been that way since the 70’s. I think after 74, they were required to have them.

My uncle bought a ’69 Mercury Cyclone CJ in Georgia last month. It had a Georgia title.

Same in NH, older cars can be bought, sold, and registered with a Bill of Sale only.

When I went to sell my ’70 Vette after nearly 30 years of ownership that I bought on a Bill of Sale, I paid $25 for a title application and had to take it down to the local P.D. to verify that the registration matched the VIN. 3 weeks later, I had a title to pass onto anyone who bought the car.

I registered a 1971 Mark III in Vermont once; at DMV they took the Missouri title and threw it in the trash though they were not going to issue me a new VT title for it. (Too old, no titles there for old vehicles.) I asked the clerk ‘if you’re tossing that out can I have it back please?’ and she said ‘okay’ and I was glad I had it later when I sold the car. At least I had something concrete for a title…

I wouldn’t go as far as to say the red one is nicer, I’m partial to this color combo.

This whole bill of sale vs title has been beaten to death. It’s state by state law. Several states don’t issue titles for older vehicles. The state bill of sale is all that’s required to transfer the car into your state. Your state will issue a title.

Sounds like a nightmare to register this in California. I watched an episode of Judge Judy a while back and a gentleman sold a vehicle with a Bill of Sale only to young lady. She couldn’t understand why he didn’t give the young woman a title. After 15 minutes he still couldn’t get her to understand. He lost

I JUST sold a really NICE 73 Mustang convertible for $15k. It took me 5 months of prime convertible weather here in Scottsdale AZ. This one was red over white, 351C, auto, ac, pw, ram air hood, etc, loaded with factory mags too.

$15 k is all the money on these, regardless of what the value guides say. A similar nice one just sold at Barrett Jackson Palm Beach during prime time and only got $14 …

    Moparman,

How do you get a title in Georgia if the chain of titles has been broken? Please explain as the Georgia DMV will not allow you to title a 1985 and prior vehicle if the title chain has been broken. You of course can register the vehicle in Georgia with a bill of sale and an inspection of the VIN by a law enforcement officer to obtain your tag. That’s how I have my 67 Cougar XR7 tagged in Georgia. Of course I researched the vehicle’s VIN with the National Insurance Crime Bureau web site to verify the vehicle was not stolen or identified as a total loss as vehicles can easily move from state to state of teh years.

On another note – I recently sold a mint 1972 Mustang Convertible for little less than $12K with a GA title but with a 302 ci but highly optioned. This Cougar is just as nice but not enough pictures or description of options. If this is a Q code it may bring $14 to $14.5K. The steering wheel is aftermarket and the white top is impossible to keep clean. I prefer black top personally.

This is directly from Broadway Title’s (Maine) web site:

Due to changes in their title laws, we are unable to due titles in the following states under ANY circumstances. Alaska, Alabama, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, North Carolina, Wisconsin. Please note, Laws change on a constant basis. So please check with us on any of the states listed. Please call for additional information.

That’s why I have asked the question above as to how you “CAN” obtain a title in Georgia. Apparently a bill of sale from a non-title state doesn’t work anymore.

Most likely this car is an XR-7. If the seller had provided the VIN that would confirm it. Yes, the two small gauges are a part of the XR-7 package. A few other things that can be seen that would point to the car being an XR-7 are the seats, only the XR-7 had the embossed Cougar emblem, the chrome strip on the top outer edge of the doors, the bank of 3 toggle switches in the dash, the middle switch is hidden by the rim of the steering wheel, the woodgrain finish on the instrument cluster face, the door panels are at least decor style and could be XR-7 style, not enough of them are shown to be certain, the speedometer has a tripodometer, and the grab handle above the glovebox. All of these things point to being an XR-7.

Love these ’73 Cougar XR-7 Convertibles! This is a nice one, if the miles do not scare anyone–it looks to have been very well maintained. Like the colors–but notice some pics have the stock steering wheel versus an after-market one. Priced a bit on the high side. Wish seller told more about the car and its history and included more pics!
