Fiberglass Project: 1961 Chevrolet Corvette 4-Speed

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Early Corvettes have always drawn attention, whether fully restored or still waiting to be finished, and this 1961 Chevrolet Corvette currently listed on eBay falls into the latter category. Described as an unfinished restoration project, it offers a mix of completed work and remaining tasks for someone ready to take it across the finish line. Thanks for the tip, T.J.!

According to the seller, a significant amount of work has already gone into the car, both by the current owner and a previous one. The Corvette is powered by a 283 cubic-inch V8 paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. The seller notes that while they haven’t done much mechanical work themselves, inspection of the engine suggests it has been rebuilt and has seen little use since. They also mention driving the car briefly and being impressed with how it performed.

A large portion of the effort appears to have focused on the structure and body. The seller states that the body was removed from the chassis, allowing both the frame and the underside of the body to be cleaned and painted. During that process, spring shackle bushings were replaced, and a quality aluminum radiator was installed.

Work has also been done to fit the front body panel, which the seller describes as a detailed and careful process. Aligning the hood and front body components correctly required adjustment and access work, including some fiberglass modifications to reach mounting points. As a result, the car will need additional fiberglass finishing to smooth everything out and complete the bodywork.

The seller emphasizes that while the remaining fiberglass work is necessary, it is relatively straightforward compared to traditional metal fabrication. They describe the car as complete to the best of their knowledge, with the exception of the windshield frame.

The project stalled due to life circumstances, including time spent away from the vehicle and other priorities. Now, the seller is looking to pass it on to someone who can complete what’s already been started.

The 1961 Corvette represents an important point in early Corvette development, with clean styling and strong enthusiast support. Projects like this often appeal to buyers who want to be involved in the final stages of a restoration rather than starting from scratch.

With structural work completed, a rebuilt engine in place, and body alignment already underway, this Corvette appears to be positioned at a stage where the next owner can focus on finishing details and bringing it back together.

You always have to wonder the reasons they selling a car that’s “midstream” in its rebuilding process. What caused the pause, so to speak. Anyway, I hope when it’s painting time, the purchaser doesn’t paint the thing red/orange or orange/red, whatever that color is you see so many of them wearing. It would be a guarantee of looking anonymous. Better yet, make it your own! Black, light yellow, robin’s egg blue, and many other colors would be stunning if white inserts were added. These are beautiful cars.

Sometimes they lose interest, sometimes they run out of money, sometimes they need the money, or sometimes they run into a major problem and try to pawn it off on someone else. Look at the car in person and give it a thorough checkout………or pay the money and hire someone who will do an honest appraisal.

“This listing was ended by the seller on Wed, Mar 25 at 3:57 PM because the item is no longer available.”

Third one today. EBay has to remove this option as it seems like nothing that is listed is ever actually sold through EBay.

I’ve noticed that more people are avoiding eBay fees as well these days. The original listing actually says he wanted to sell it asap and will take Bitcoin (bad idea at this point ’cause he’s almost guaranteed to lose money), cash in hand or a bank transfer, but preferably NOT on eBay, and apparently that’s what happened.

You have to pay upfront to list a car on eBay.

Thanks Jesse, I didn’t know that. Even at $79 for the premium package it’s pretty cheap. In light of the seller’s statement it looks like he must have wanted to avoid their Secure Purchase protection for buyers.

Jesse, do you know if a vehicle that sells on EBay, does the buyer have to pay an additional amount over that original upfront fee? It seems to me that a whole lot of transactions are taking place outside of EBay lately.
