Field Find: 1971 Chevrolet C-10 Custom

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1971 Chevrolet C10 is right at home in this Clayton, New Mexico field. It has been in the same family since new and spent its life on a ranch in North East New Mexico. It can be found here on eBay with a buy-it-now price of $5,000. It looks like a pretty typical farm truck with a few dents and dings, but overall, it appears to be a decent project. Have a look!

It appears like the truck has been used for parts. You can see some spark plug wires missing. It also appears the alternator is askew. The seller does say the 4-bolt 350 was not seized last time they checked it, so hopefully with some small bits and pieces replaced it will fire up. The engine is backed by a 4-speed transmission, which probably challenged a few farm kids over the years.

The interior has seen better days. It appears to have been used for a bit of storage, so it’s a little hard to get a good picture of the condition. The upholstery clearly needs to be addressed. I bet a good cleaning will do wonders for the door panels and dash. Check out the mark on the door near the bottom of the window. That door has seen its share of forearms over the years!

The seller does say there are a few rust issues, but generally, it looks pretty solid. Do you think this truck would be better as a project or for a parts donor? Let us know.

Sheesh, you know, perhaps it’s my age or how I was brought up, but it takes a lot of guts asking $5g’s for this. I guess I’m obviously having trouble with this “2020 value” thing. I’m thinking strongly about selling, or preferably trading for a Jeep, my ’77 shortbox GMC. I just couldn’t sleep at night asking more than $3 grand for it, yet, these folks have no problem asking $5 for this. Am I the one out of touch? Is a truck like this that clearly needs everything, really worth $5 grand? If so, should mine, a running, driving nice truck, that needs nothing but paint, be worth the same? Does my faded paint add $1,000 bucks? Nobody bidding, I might have answered my own questions.

HoA; No sheiss! Crazy..at least put the wires on it and clean it out.

I would ask 5 k for my long bed ’72 C-10 but it has a rebuilt engine with less than 1500 miles on it! But I dont want to sell it.

Apparently the fact free world in old iron perfectly matches the current situation in D.C………must be sort sort of cosmic synergy .

Not the only one out of touch. Been looking for a good used car out here in Iowa and keep getting told 150,000 thousand miles rust bucket is low miles good shape and $10,000 is a good price.

At least it won’t go the way of it’s cousin in the background…

With you Howard. $5k is a bit much. Especially with the rust issue. Standing water in the bed isn’t good either. I’m thinking $1500.

There is a reason for the high price- it’s outstanding in its field.

It’s the best year in my mind, with disc brakes and real door panels. the 350 4 speed combo is great too. owned one like it for years and loved it. This one is the custom, with chrome trim around windows.

However, that upper cab rust is concerning. That will take quite a bit of fabrication to repair, including potentially a new skin. A replacement cab may be in order. And it’s impossible to tell the condition of the rockers and floors.

Looks like the rad is gone and other front engine parts. The shroud is there. No tailgate or rear bumper. Front bumper needs attention.

New to see it before I’d make any kind of an offer. $5k is way out there.

I always thought the ’69-’72 Chevy pickups were the best looking trucks Chevy ever made, the styling is just perfect. All that being said, this one needs everything refreshed/restored. The rust in the roof is worrisome and the body needs a lot of dent repair. Plus you’d have to source a tailgate and a step bumper. I like the color, a fresh coat of paint will have it looking sharp. As far as the motor goes, who knows if it’s any good at this point so you may be looking at a re-build. I’m thinking $2k tops considering the current condition. More than that, I’d pass on it and try to find a better one to start with.

@Montana, take a closer look at that alternator. It’s more than just askew, all its bracketry has been removed and is sitting on the exhaust manifold.

Parts truck! The rust on top is easy to see but what’s hidden is probably much worse. I ‘d pass on this one for $5K – IMO only worth $1,500 as there are 2 many unknowns.

Throw in the other truck, and it’s a fair deal!
