Fine Tuning Needed: 1986 Buick Regal Grand National

This 1986 Buick Grand National is a running, driving example that has been mildly refreshed following years of storage, but more fine-tuning is needed, according to the seller. The Buick looks sharp on larger-than-stock alloy wheels, and the shiny black paint almost entirely masks the missing bumper filler trim that the seller claims to have front replacements of. The Grand National continues to be a desired collector car, but will this one’s less-than-stock condition keep potential buyers away? The Buick is listed for $15,000 or best offer and listed here on craigslist near Windsor,  Connecticut.

The bumper fillers are missing out back, too, a common occurrence (seemingly) with GM products of this era. The good news is despite the years off the road, the body has remained in great shape, even with the missing trim pieces. The listing doesn’t mention a repaint, so if that’s original paint with over 100,000 miles, we’re impressed. I can’t tell for sure what car the wheels came from, but they definitely appear much wider than the stock rollers; I’d even argue that upfront, the offset looks too low, as the wheels don’t exactly sit flush with the fenders. Those are minor points, however, and perhaps justification for lowering the car.

The interior is in fine shape, with the classic Grand National two-tone cloth buckets appearing to be free of any major staining or dirt. The same goes for the console and door panels, all of which present well. The good news here is we don’t see any tell-tale signs of bad modifications, like oversized boost gauges or tachs hung haphazardly off of the dash. The standard automatic transmission was rebuilt in the last 5,000 miles, so hopefully that won’t be a pain point for the next owner. The seller doesn’t mention whether the A/C works or if the Grand National retains its stock audio components; the head unit looks aftermarket.

Now, it’s been mostly good news to this point, and the seller further adds that he’s added a clean fuel tank and high-pressure pump. The engine was also rebuilt approximately 35,000 miles ago, and the seller mentions (but doesn’t specify) that there are some bolt-on performance parts attached. The downside is that the listing discloses some unresolved issues that cause the Grand National to run rich at wide-open throttle, along with the need to replace valve cover gaskets. Overall, though, these issues seem fairly minor in the grand scheme of things, and may even be caused by the bolt-on tweaks the seller mentions.

Swap the wheels for GNX-style ones, install new bumper fillers, add some speed parts to that turbo 3.8 and go late-model Mustang, Camaro and Challenger hunting

I remember back in the day of the Mustang vs Buick events at Englishtown Raceway Park. It was fun seeing those turbo cars beating the fox bodies! Those wheels look sharp on the GN.

The wheels look like American Racing wheels to me. Possibly customized also. They look nice, but GNX rims would be killer here.

1st time i seen digital gages on a GN! A rare option? Or is this 1 of the GN’s “cousins”?

Not rare at all…many have that option.
