Ready For Finishing: 1968 Plymouth Road Runner

My favorite year! No, not chronologically, I mean my favorite year Plymouth Road Runner.  Sometimes, the first is the best and that’s how I vote on the ’68 edition. This Road Runner isn’t exactly a “runner” but it’s still an interesting car and worthy of a closer look, nevertheless. This ’68 Plymouth is located in Fraser, Michigan and is available, here on craigslist for $13,000. Thanks to Larry D for this tip!

OK, so this one is a roller and originally possessed a 335 gross HP, 383 CI V8 (VIN verified), and a TorqueFlite automatic transmission but both are gone so that opens up possibilities. One could try to keep this RR date correct with a vintage 383, or at this point go for broke with a modern Hemi. I always prefer to see original cars stay original, but once a major change like a missing engine occurs, the keg has been tapped, so why not run with it? Underneath reveals what looks like new leaf springs and a Dana 60 differential so someone was thinking about putting some hubba-hubba under the hood!

Outside, we have a fairly straight-looking body with no sign of the infamous Road Runner Rust or a side-swiped body panel from clipping a fence on a speed-shifting power run. The seller does mention the poor quarter panel repair, just behind the driver’s side door and yes, it needs attention. The seller adds that there is a new hood (obviously aftermarket), a new windshield frame, and a replaced trunk floor. The finish is fair and would certainly work on a street cruiser – it would be up to the new owner if they were looking for something more finished. The painted bumpers are a matter of taste – I’d prefer the chrome-plated version though the grille and tail-panel trim looks fine. And while the ’68 Road Runner is my favorite, it’s the two-door post coupe body style just makes it, it’s the definition of what the Road Runner was supposed to be, no-frills, high-performance fun, on the cheap.

Inside is a pretty standard Road Runner interior, the seller mentions that there is a new dash (dash pad?) and a headliner though the headliner needs some noted additional attention. The instrument panel is a standard spartan affair, minus its radio, but it looks great so maybe the seller does mean the entire dash is new. Other needs will include new carpet and underlay along with replacement door and side panels. Speaking of the carpet, it has been pulled up and shows the bare floors, with some minor surface rust, but the seller claims that this car is a solid one. The original blue vinyl upholstery has seen better days and will require a makeover, hopefully in a different shade.

The seller suggests, “Big dollar when finished” – probably true though that depends largely on how this Road Runner is finished out, different directions will produce different financial results. My thought is regardless, this car needs to be steered in a productive direction, there’s a sound basis here. Tell me, what would you do to complete this ’68 Plymouth Road Runner picture?

The grille may look good, but its off a Belvedere or Satellite -The Road Runner grille squares were argent . I had hoped from the first picture that this was a solid project car, but with all the Bondo repair and the steel parts that have already been replaced its just another thrashed and forgotten B body
