Flatbed Find: 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

For more than 40 years, the Grand Prix filled several roles in the Pontiac lineup, most notably as a performance-oriented personal luxury car. After its beginning in 1962, the automobile grew quickly in popularity, more than doubling its sales the following year. This ’63 edition is said to have been a running car a decade ago, but times have changed, and we see it on the back of a flatbed trailer now. Located in Lake Worth, Florida, this 60-year-old classic is available here on eBay where the opening bid of $3,000 has been elusive so far.

The 1963 Grand Prix was no slouch in either the sport, luxury, or performance categories. Available in a single body style, the automobile came standard with a 389 cubic inch V8 engine at a minimum output of 303 hp. But you could add “Tri-Power” to the mix or get the bigger 421 V8 and boost that to 370 hp. Bucket seats and a console were part of the package and nearly 73,000 copies were built in ’63 with most coming with an automatic transmission. That’s the set-up we’re told is present in the seller’s car.

For 1963, the Grand Prix gained stacked rather than horizontal headlights and its own roofline with a concave rear window. We don’t know much about this Pontiac other than there is a bunch of spare parts in the trunk, but that doesn’t mean the car comes complete. The auto may never have been restored and the body isn’t perfect with “rust here and there but nothing horrible.” It was once maroon in color, but grey primer is present in several places, most noticeably the doors and roof. The interior looks okay, but the carpet has faded from black to grey.

This was a well-equipped cruiser when new, including factory air conditioning. But the overall car needs a restoration that could be worthwhile if corrosion is no worse than the seller believes. Pontiacs must be in the seller’s bloodline as he has two 1970s/1980s Trans Am’s also for sale.

No pictures of the engine or trunk? Buyers are taking a risk. What’s in the tote in the back seat

Not a factory air car. e-bay ad says A/C is in trunk, so guessing it is a hang down unit. Don’t see any dash vents on either end or center. Pretty much a basic Gran Prix roll up windows, AM radio, heater defroster, nothing to write home about almost close enough to call it a #5, but lack of info, and decent pictures, no engine, or trunk contents to back up claims to me puts it at a #6 for about $1500.00.

If this pile goes to Mr Cruncher, that would make the rest of them more valuable. Simple economics.

I have seen a lot worse that cost a lot more on this site that needs to go to the crusher. If this was near me it would probably be sitting in my driveway instead of heading to the crusher. This car deserves another chance.

    Well…she did find a home…mine actually..lol
She is rusty though…being from Washington state. Frame rail on the right side under the door rusted away..about a 14″ lower portion and some other areas as well, but the floor pans are actually in remarkable condition. To do a total frame off restoration would be $$$.
So she will be a driver. She does run…actually pretty well and the interior is pretty decent..just needs a reconditioning.
As bad as something may seem…just remember…it’s all fixable…if you have the time and $. I will get the frame squared away and replace/repair the body panels and give her some sort of ratrod look with some new shoes. She’ll be good..not off the showroom good, but nice enough.
