'83 Ford EXP race car

Who wants to go racing? How about racing in a factory supported SCCA Racer? Listed here on eBay and garaged in Bothell, Washington is this 1983-84 Mercury LN-7 with a reserve not met and bidding at $1,300. According to the owner this car was built by PBS Engineering and it became 1 of 3 SCCA Ford EXP race cars with backing and support from the Ford Motor Company and Ford Motorsports. This car was driven by Mr. Jerry Barker.

Included with this car is a Kirkey seat, a halon fire suppression system, a glass windshield, fiberglass fenders, hood and hatch, and a formed Lexan bubble back window.

'83 Ford EXP race car left rear

The seller states that the entire suspension has been modified for better geometry and adjust-ability for racing with a 3 piece custom rear sway bar as part of the mix. You also get JFZ brake calipers, 13″ SSR magnesium centered 3 piece race wheels and of course a fuel cell. This is a project and it appears to be a rare chance to own a piece of Ford Motorsports Racing history. This car was raced for 2 seasons before Ford moved onto focus on the Escort SCCA racing project.

would want to also see and review the logbooks and all build paperwork but looks interesting in the photos. comes with a lot of parts. might make a good ” cheap car racing ” , autocross, or hillclimb race car. or part it out but it all depends on where the reserve it set. great find

I think our former 2004 GTO/Holden Manaro still holds the record at 1 billion penalty laps. Jay might take the $500 claimer’s prize on this EXP.

This could be a real hoot… vintage (?) racing for short (relatively speaking) money

I know where one of the three EXP’s is sitting in a trailer south of Topeka, KS. basically abandoned. The cars had short lives due to the rules changing and making RWD tube frame cars the way to go.

I also remember a Ford dealer in St. Louis (where I grew up) that bought one of the three and raced it for few years. At the time it was fast and pretty cool.

Today its nothing more than a footnote and odd vintage race car as technology in SCCA has moved so far along it would take a mountain of money to make it competitive in GTL. Hope it finds a good home!

Being FWD kills any real interest in this car. Perfect size for a RWD sleeper, but the 1980s saw FWD as the be all end all of car engineering with very few exceptions.

I had an exp, stock. problem with it had a timing belt that liked to destruct @ 40,000 miles, and valves that liked to crush pistons. After my first replacement motor, the service manager told me it was a weak point in that motor. Other than that one ( serious) problem, it was a fun car to drive.
