Freshly-Rebuilt 390 V8: 1966 Ford F-100 Custom

A 390 V8? Fourth-generation Ford F-Series pickup fans may know that a 352 V8 was the biggest engine available in this era for this truck, but the seller says this one is powered by a freshly rebuilt (.030 over) 390. The seller has this 1966 Ford F-100 Custom Cab posted here on craigslist in Burnips, Michigan and they’re asking $11,500. Here is the original listing and thanks to Mitchell G. for the tip!

Short-bed vintage pickups get most of the love these days, but a regular eight-foot box is the way to go if a person has any real hauling to do. The short-bed trucks have a 115″ wheelbase and the long-bed trucks have a 129″ wheelbase. The fourth-generation F-series trucks were made from late 1960 for the 1961 model year until the end of the 1966 model year. They came right before the currently-hot bumpside trucks.

The Styleside bed is arguably the more popular choice among most F-Series truck owners over the Flareside version, but it’s pool or pond for me, either one works and I think the Flareside would be more unusual to see today so it might be my first choice. Either one will haul a four-foot-wide sheet of plywood. I’ve never hauled a 4×8 sheet of plywood in six decades, and the majority of pickup owners today don’t use their trucks to haul building supplies so it’s a moot point, really. Here’s what the back of this one looks like.

Along with a “bright metal grille” and other trim, Custom Cab models got fancier interiors, including “woven plastic seat fabric.” That would sound absolutely horrible in a brochure today for a $70,000 pickup, wouldn’t it? Ha. There are a few issues with the interior here but nothing that most Barn Finds readers couldn’t whip into shape in a few weekends.

Here’s the bump-up in displacement over what would have been the top engine. The seller says this is a 390-cu.in. OHV V8 that’s been bored .030 and it runs and drives “amazing” and it sure looks clean. The 352 V8 would have had 208 horsepower and we don’t know what this one currently puts out, 250 maybe? This truck also has new brakes front-to-back (lines, master cylinder, etc.). It sends power to a three-speed manual through a column shifter to the rear wheels. Hagerty is at $10,400 for a #4 fair-condition truck with a 352, what is this one worth?

    A fun truck to own. This is the first time I seen a 390-2… the ones I seen had 4bbl. But in the tool box you can see the top of the air filter cover reads 390-2. So maybe since being a truck they put a 2bbl on it. It’s looks great being this old. If a brought it I would give it a new paint job. And get many years of enjoyment out of it.
