Frozen 5.8L Project: 1996 Ford Bronco U100 4×4

The final-generation Ford Bronco has carved out a loyal following, and even project-grade examples continue to attract attention from enthusiasts who appreciate their size, capability, and classic two-door SUV profile. This 1996 Ford Bronco U100, listed here on eBay, is being offered as a straightforward project with a clean title and 230,000 miles on the odometer.

Finished in silver with a silver interior, this Bronco is equipped with Ford’s 5.8-liter V8 paired with an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. The seller describes it as a “good clean used Bronco with frozen engine,” making it clear that this is not a running driver at the moment. The engine is currently seized, and anyone considering the purchase should plan for either a rebuild or replacement before returning it to the road.

Aside from the frozen engine, the listing suggests the truck presents as a solid starting point. With 4WD, an automatic transmission, and the larger 5.8L V8 configuration, it has the desirable foundation many Bronco buyers look for when planning a revival or build. The clean title adds an important layer of reassurance for those looking to restore or modify without paperwork complications.

At 230,000 miles, this Bronco has clearly seen use, which is common for these trucks given their durability and everyday utility. Many examples from this era were driven hard and often modified, making clean, complete project candidates increasingly harder to find. While no claims are made about recent service or mechanical updates beyond the engine’s condition, the listing positions this as a usable platform rather than a stripped-down parts vehicle.

The 1996 model year also represents the end of the classic full-size Bronco run before the nameplate went on hiatus. That fact alone has pushed interest higher in recent years, especially among buyers who want a traditional body-on-frame SUV with simple mechanical systems and strong aftermarket support.

For someone willing to tackle an engine swap or rebuild, this Bronco could become a capable trail rig, weekend cruiser, or restored classic SUV. With its 5.8L V8 configuration, four-wheel drive, and clean title, it checks several important boxes for a project-minded buyer.

Not every Bronco needs to be a pristine survivor to have value, sometimes the right foundation is all it takes. Would you rebuild the original 5.8L or drop in something new and give this 1996 U100 a second life?

Comes with a 351w out of a 97 f150 for an additional $800? The 97 f150 was the first year of the 4.6 and 5.4 Tritons.

Being an old Ford parts guy. I always refer/remember these as U150s. I never saw a U100 designation. In order to kill a 351W. You have to run it out of oil or coolant. In both cases, the engine gets REALLY HOT! So much so that alot of heat gets transferred to the transmission. So because of the heat and the miles, I would wonder about the condition of the transmission. Just sayin’

The Bronco “series number” was U100, with the VINs starting with U15 for this generation.

why not just include the motor with the price of the truck? over 200k roll of the dice on the rest of the truck.
