Fun In The Sun: 1977 Alfa Romeo Spider

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The name Alfa Romeo is synonymous with some very desirable Italian automotive works. This 1977 Alfa Romeo Spider may not live up to the desirability of its ancestors, but it also doesn’t carry the same price tag as those that came before it either. This one found here on Craigslist in the Kansas City area might be the cure for the summertime blues, especially for those on a tighter budget.

Not a lot of detail is given according to the car’s full condition, but the pictures make this one at least worth taking a second look. This bright red convertible sports a set of Daytona Ferrari cast wheels and a set of dual Weber carbs. The seller states that it has a new top which is a really nice selling point. The listing doesn’t say how well the car runs but does say to call to set up a test drive which is promising.

It looks like 1977 offered a few different levels for this model – the Spider 1300 Junior, the Spider 1600 Junior, and the Spider 2000 Veloce, which ranged anywhere from about 90 to 120 horsepower. Unfortunately, the listing doesn’t specify which version it is, but it would be interesting to know.

With the droptop, this Alfa Romeo would be perfect for running some small weekend errands or heading out for a fun date night. A quick search of similar cars reveals that the asking price is below what others are asking. With an asking price under $4,000 is this one worth looking into?

Looks exactly like mine did in College, except silver. Never had a single problem, great cars.

In the US, we got only the two liter in 1977 and it was equipped with SPICA mechanical fuel injection. Many cars were converted to Webers in period, but these days the preference is for the SPICA. Unusually the open car of this 105 series is worth much less than the coupe (GTV), even though they are mechanically identical, probably because we in the US kept getting them long after the GTV was discontinued after 1974. Rust is the big problem with Alfas, but if this car is as nice as it appears in the few pictures, it would be a fun drive. The headlight covers are a nice addition. The missing rear bumper was pretty ugly, but shouldn’t be hard to replace. Centerline sells a stainless bumper retrofit for, gulp, $2295.

I always had a soft spot for Alfas. Owning a similar 78 spider and GTV in college. I think the unreliable moniker is undeserved. With no rubber cam belts to break the only thing that ever let go for me was the clutch disc breaking loose from its center support. The Spica FI was always in tune. The thermostatic actuator never failed for me as on some others that I heard of but maybe it was the mild California climate. Now Im on the hunt for a used G-Quad with the 505 HP.

Ferrari wheels????? Wished you folks would do some research before spouting things you do not know about!!!! Those wheels were and are made for the Alfa as well as other makes and models. They were actually available from the factory in the 80’s when I sold Alfa Romeos!!!

They are just like Daytona wheels in design to be fair except not centre single mount.
