Fun To Drive: 1980 Chevrolet Corvette

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

So I may get hate mail for this but I think the C3 Corvette is the best looking model of the Chevrolet Corvette. This 4 speed 1980 Chevrolet Corvette is striking in yellow and, of course, when you see the picture of the swing up, butterfly doors, it is even more intriguing. This 1980 Chevrolet Corvette is listed here on Craigslist and is located in Alloway, New Jersey. Mitchell G. sent us the link and we appreciate it. The seller is asking $16,000 for this 1980 Chevrolet Corvette and the ad has been up for almost a month.

As a bonus, the engine of this numbers matching Corvette is a 4 speed. The car has 53,600 miles on the odometer and the black interior looks to be in pretty good shape. The seller states that they are selling because they just don’t drive it and it needs a new home. The car is equipped with T-Tops like all 1980 Corvettes. It also has power windows, air conditioning and tilt/telescopic wheel.

The engine pics of this car look like it is modified even though the ad states that it is numbers matching. The base engine for the 1980 Corvette was the L-48 350 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 190 horsepower and could be ordered with a 4 speed manual or 3 speed automatic transmission. The optional engine was the L-82 350 cubic inch V8 engine that only came with an automatic transmission in 1980. It was rated at 230 horsepower. An LG4 305 cubic inch V8 engine was installed in Corvettes bought in California. It was rated at 180 horsepower. As with the L-82, the LG4 could only be ordered with a 3 speed automatic transmission.

The 1980 Corvette had some subtle changes from 1979 including molded in front and rear spoilers. After this feature was introduced, it was popular by many Corvette enthusiasts to add the rear spoiler piece from a 1980 to their 1976-1979 Corvettes. Sales for the Corvette decreased from 53,807 units in 1979 to 40,614 units in 1980.What are the other differences that you may know of?

The “Lambo” door conversion goes for a little over $1,500 on Ecklers website. I don’t know of a way to ruin the value of a car more quickly. This style of door conversion was a bit of a fad in the early to mid-2000’s and it makes any vehicle they are installed on a clown car.

That’s a cheap way to cut the car’s value in half.

It can’t be hard to put the doors back to normal, right? Otherwise, this looks pretty good. Too bad couldn’t get the better engines with manual at that time. I didn’t realize that.

I like the style of these, as well Bruce. But… getting in and out is tough enough without the need to dodge the open doors!

I wonder how much it would cost to fix the doors so they open like a real car?
    Just pondering.

Bruce, I’m going to agree with you that C3’s are by far the most like Vette’s. In the near future they are going to be more pricey. All those with with bells and whistles coupled with the electronics are not going to be very repairable.

Doors are a total waste of money. And why remove the stock air cleaner is 100 times better at bringing cool air to the engine than that cheap China heap of crap? Ugh in 1980, both the L48 and L82 had a dual snorkel setup with hoses bringing in air over the radiator support.

I agree the C3 Corvettes are the most appealing body style. As a classic car person, who wouldn’t want one. I must say, I do love the C8 Corvettes as well !

Imagine trying to design gullwing doors for a C3 with the doors’ complex curves.
