Garage Find: 1967 Chevrolet Camaro

For many, the first-generation Camaro was the best. Those three production years, 1967-1969, saw just shy of 700,000 copies produced and there are many still prowling the streets of America. Finding an unmodified or already restored example is becoming increasingly rare but located in Dallas, Texas and available here on eBay is a 1967 version for a current bid of $6,700 with 26 bids tendered so far.

The seller doesn’t provide much detail regarding this Camaro but the details can be pieced together to a degree. First up, this Camaro is a standard “Sports Coupe” model, not a performance-oriented variant. While it is covered in primer (and sanded through in places) the body panels appear to be straight and intact. It looks like this Camaro wore a vinyl top at some point in its past and it has now been removed. So much the better as moisture trapped under a vinyl covering is one of the major contributors to serious, hard to repair, rust on this vintage car. The accompanying images don’t reveal any close-up detail but the roof surface should be closely examined for surface rust-through. Other common pitfalls with this generation Camaro is rust in the lower quarters and fenders, the images available, however, are not indicative of a problem. Other than the aftermarket wheels, this is a pretty original subject.

The seller lists this Camaro as having a V8 engine and though he does not detail its specifics. It appears to be a 210 gross HP, 327 CI V8. There is no word regarding its operational capability. The seller also indicates that this Chevy is equipped with a three-speed automatic transmission but that would only be the case if the original two-speed Powerglide has been replaced with a later Turbo-Hydramatic. The Turbo-Hydramatic 350, three-speed automatic was still two years away at this point and the “400” version was only used in a big-block engine equipped 1967 Camaros. One nice inclusion is air conditioning – no word if it works. Also noted under the hood is an AIR pump and the VIN would indicate that this is a Los Angeles built car so it would make one think that it spent some part of its life in California – a good indicator for overall integrity.

There is no discussion regarding the floors or underside of this Camaro as well as no details or images of the interior so I can’t tell you anything about it. As goes the topside, so does the underside (probably). While there is no way to know the condition of the sub-frame, cross member or torque-boxes I would make a leap of faith that the structure is sound.

The seller tells us that this car has 35,000 miles but I imagine it is more of a case where the odometer indicates 35,000 miles. It could have been around once (or twice) or knocked out of service at some point. This Camaro is a garage find according to the seller but no indication is given as to how long it was parked. It seems to be a very complete example of a desirable collectible car but there is very little known about it due to the slimness of the listing. Supposedly there are some additional parts that go with the sale, spoilers and other unidentified parts, etc. If you are interested in a first-generation Camaro project this one would be worth further investigation don’t you think?

From the pictures, Camaro is most likely at a car corral.

Amazing the A.I.R. pump survived. That is a two year only first design. In 68, they were larger with a relief valve on top. Has 68 fenders as the first person commented. Good catch.

It’s increasingly rare to find an already restored Camaro? Seems like you can’t go outside without tripping over one 🤣

I’ve never been a fan of first generation F-bodies but, if I was looking for one, the 1967 model would be my choice. The reason? I LOVE wing windows and the 1967 models were the only ones that had them! Does anyone else miss wing windows?
