Garage Find: 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix Model J

This 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix has been sitting in a garage for the past 25-years, but the time has now come for it to head off to a new home. It appears to be a nice, clean car that is just waiting to be returned to the road. Barn Finder local_sheriff referred the Pontiac to us, so thank you so much for that. It is located in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and is listed for sale here on eBay. The owner has set a BIN price of $6,750, but the option is available to make an offer. For those who might doubt the popularity of the Grand Prix, it is worth noting that there are currently 63 people who are watching the listing.

The Grand Prix is finished in Lucerne Blue Metallic with a black vinyl top. The photos supplied by the owner aren’t great, but they do seem to show a car that is free of any rust issues. The owner makes no mention of any problems with the floor, and if the garage in which the photos have been taken is where the car has spent the last 25-years, then the storage conditions appear to be very favorable. I do believe that the car has been the recipient of a repaint at some point in its life because I think that I can see some evidence of overspray in a couple of spots. The factory 15″ wheels really suit the car nicely, and it looks like a good wash and polish would have the car presenting quite nicely.

We only get two photos of the Pontiac’s interior, but they do look quite promising. The passenger seat looks like it will need a new cover, but the rest of the interior appears to be in quite decent condition. There are aftermarket speakers fitted to the rear parcel tray, but I can’t tell whether an aftermarket stereo has replaced the car’s original radio. A couple of nice bonuses are the tilt wheel and the fact that the Pontiac is fitted with factory air conditioning. As with the car’s exterior, it really looks like a good clean (and that new seat cover) would have the interior presenting quite nicely.

A 400ci V8 engine, Turbo Hydramatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes are what you get with the Pontiac. The V8 would pump out 250hp, and while the Grand Prix is no light-weight, its performance would still be acceptable. The owner doesn’t mention whether the car runs or drives, or whether it has even been started during the 25-years that it has been in storage. The engine and surrounds do look quite tidy and clean, and with the battery looking relatively fresh, there is some cause to be quietly optimistic on this front.

This 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix really does show some promise, and it has generated a reasonable amount of interest since being listed for sale. With the limited number of photos that the owner has provided, it is a car that will require a personal inspection to verify just how good it actually is. However, if such an inspection reveals a solid and clean car, then someone could be onto a winner if they were to purchase this car.

IMO the buy it now price is more than fair if the car presents itself in person as well as the picture, I would love it to be a SJ with a 428 and a four speed but for under seven grand this is a steal. Did I mention I like it?

the 428 and 4 speed wasn’t available in 1972, IIRC, 69 was the last year for that …

No surprise. This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available.

Pulled because someone told the owner they could get more after a $50 bath.

So he jumped in the shower and is waiting for an offer…..

I just don’t get it. How hard is it to wash a car, wipe down the interior and hit it with a vacuum cleaner? The results of an hour or two of the sellers time might have brought him a much better price. If you’re too lazy, give your neighbor’s kid $20 and watch him do it from the front porch with a beer. Wouldn’t surprise me if this neat Tin Indian sold, though. Looks like a nice one for the money.

I was one of those watchers. Tried to contact the seller to ask some basic questions (ie. where/how much rust) but he didn’t respond. Since he’s about 10 states away from me, I wasn’t exactly at an advantage… that’s the sort of car that normally goes to the “guy down the street”.

What’s under the cover? Looks like a 67-68 Firebird.

GP is nice. Price was fair. Looks like mold on the interior.

I like these cars a lot. I was working at a Pontiac store when the “new” body style 1971 came out. Everyone ( including me) preferred the ’69-’70 body style. But the customers did not slow up buying them. So we must have been in the minority. I always loved the dash boards. They were very cool then. ( pretty oh hum these days) The dealership that I worked at was majority owned by the largest Pontiac dealer in the country. I was able to drive his personal G/P once. It looked completely stock, but when you stood on the loud pedal it was a rocket! It was still an automatic, but I have no idea what was under the hood. It also handled really well. So I suspect it went somewhere after the assembly line, but before it was delivered to the dealership. I really loved that car and I made sure that my drive took as long as I could get away with. ( at least 4-5 full cloverleaf circuits with full power between the on and exit lanes which was fun as there were several cloverleaf exits to be used in my trip) Black cars are not my favorite, but I would have grabbed that one without hesitation if it was available.
