Garage Find Droptop: 1986 Ford Mustang GT

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The seller of this 1986 Ford Mustang GT convertible is only the second caretaker the four-eyed Fox has had, and it’s equipped with the preferred manual transmission. The listing claims that the seller has owned it for three years, but the pictures show it being removed from what looks like a long-time hiding spot in a suburban garage. Perhaps those photos are from when he picked it up, and thankfully, it appears to have been rescued while it was still in very good condition. The list of improvements he’s made while the Mustang has been in his care reads like a how-to manual of refreshing any car that’s been sitting for some time, which is good news for the next owner. Find the Mustang here on eBay with 121K on the clock with bidding at $5,200 and the reserve unmet.

The Mustang looks sharp with its original hood “black-out” graphic and GT branding still in place. The four-eyed nose is a matter of preference, of course, but I’ve always felt the earlier convertible was a better-looking car than the later example with the flush headlamps. The Mustang appears to remain in largely stock condition, with its original wheels still bolted on and no mention of headers or signs of an aftermarket intake. The seller does note it sports a complete Flowmaster exhaust, which is a worthwhile upgrade considering how good the 5.0L sounds with some free-flowing pipes added. Most importantly, the seller notes no signs of rust in the shock towers, frame rails, or torque boxes.

The interior is quite clean, with corresponding red cloth upholstery presenting very well for an unrestored car. Of course, it helps that the seller has added new seat covers, carpets, and floor mats, as it all makes a big difference in how clean this Mustang feels inside. Other details worth mentioning include a new convertible top, new fuel sending unit, new gas tank, new fuel pump, new H-pipe, and much more. The seller has clearly done some smart work here to make the Mustang as close to turn-key as possible as opposed to the usual garage- or barn-find nonsense wherein the car is presented with zero work done and a tall asking price.

It’s a little odd why none of the photos show the Mustang post-clean-up, but that could just be my own impression of things as the top looks quite fresh in this picture and the tags look new as well. Perhaps they just photographed it as it was being moved to a new location? Regardless, for a rust-free example with a V8 and a stick and loads of work done, the current bid number is a bit light. The four-eyed Mustang doesn’t have as many fans as the later cars it seems, but that shouldn’t stop any of us from actually bidding on a car with all the necessary tune-up work done. Address some of the faded trim, pop out a dent, and this Mustang will present even better than it does now.

If the bottom looks as clean as the top someone is going to get a sweet little ride. I’m not one for drop tops but I drove a hardtop like this new and it was hard to keep the back wheels planted when you dropped the clutch. Nice Cars and Coffee cruiser for Florida. This has N.Y tags on it so I’d look at the bottom real good.
