Garaged in ’82! 15k Mile 1970 Chevrolet Camaro

First impression:  man, that vinyl top is in unusually great shape! Offered as a 15,000-mile original, this 1970 Chevrolet Camaro found itself rudely dragged into the light after being parked since 1982. Now this garage find listed here on craigslist in Allentown, Pennsylvania can be yours for the low, low price of one dollar! Listings with bogus prices make me wonder what other funny tricks the seller might be willing to pull, so I usually start my searches at $10 or $100 to weed out the fibbers. However sometimes folks who don’t mind wasting your time sell cool cars, and you may decide this one is worth the hassle. Thanks to Ikey H. for spotting this small-block green machine.

On the positive side, this seller wisely documented this low-mileage coupe in “as found” condition then (so ten-minute difficult!) cleaned it up. Sadly others confuse their Grandpa’s Pacer with a priceless barn-find Ferrari that *might* be worth preserving forever with its dust and pigeon droppings intact. That’s just laziness, folks. This Camaro’s straight and shiny trim and original hubcaps support the low-mileage claim. Faded paint and some dents are about all we can complain about. The green paint and upholstery aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but the underside and body, in general, are reported to be largely rust-free.

Wow; that’s a good looking interior. Not perfect but very nice. The dealer-installed air conditioning unit adds interest, and it’s hard to beat the “U” shifter. It may have lost its “new car smell” but that can be sprayed on for effect.

A quick wash-job contributed some gloss here, but the 307 cid small-block and engine compartment look fairly well-preserved. A low-mileage car should probably be mechanically refurbished and kept as close as possible to the current condition. This Camaro may not have a fire-breathing 396, but that’s good news for budget-conscious shoppers. Some folks just want a neat old car to fix up and don’t worry about Googling its resale value daily or burning rubber every time a light turns green. Ironically the $1 listing warns “NO TIME WASTERS PLEASE!!!!” If you uncovered this 15k coupe, how would you price it?

Love the 70 models quirks like the one year low back buckets!! Sure wish it had disc brakes, 300/350 with a four speed and a 12 bolt rear though…

12 years of use could easily mean 115,00 miles.

How does a picture of the speedometer document mileage? If someone is claiming 1,200 miles a year before the car was put away they should have proof. At least they aren’t asking an arm and a leg. It does need a thorough inspection, it’s missing the rear portion of the console and has various spots of rust which aren’t shown clearly, his asking price might not be far off, it’s hard to tell from the ad.

More than the numbers on the dash, I want to see a picture of the brake pedal.

I seriously doubt somebody drove it so little for 12 years than let it rot for the remainder of its life.

If a person wants to be different you can build it 307 up to weigh over 300 horsepower I remember super Chevy magazine in Hot Rod Magazine doing that,,,

Nice find. I usually weed out these ads as well by starting my searches at $100. If I wanted to guess what the final price was I would shop on Ebay. Price seems fair. These cars didn’t last long in the rust belt.

These cars were much like the new Vega’s at the time….they began to rust in the dealership showrooms !!

Love these cars. someone saved a decent car but GREEN again. The green interior is unfortunate. Hard to do a color change to anything except black or white with a green interior.

This car has me scratching my head in that it has characteristics of a 15K mile car AND those of a 115K mile car. IF it IS a 15K mile car wherever it was stored and whoever stored it there should be slapped. That engine bay does not look like 15K.

Not being a RS/SS/Z28 car makes it a great candidate for a great street machine with cool mods. Originality will never bring more money on this one.

Yes, seller is a flipper and querky, but hate to say it, I think mileage claim may be real. Pedals, console and drivers seat look clean. Some engine bay tags and patina

Seller says engine now running and asking $8500 firm. IMO not a bad price given a positive personal inspection

Hey guys I am the owner of this Camaro. Whoa Bowtie Boy…. a message for you…. turn down the volume on the conspiracy theories… and I don t take well to being called a parasite. Now listen so you have the facts.. I just found out my car was put on this site (I didn t put it here but am quite honored that someone thought it was interesting enough to post here). I just got this car, which is stated in the original ad on craigslist, along with pictures of the oil change stickers to provide the only evidence of the mileage other than the condition. (The NJ Title shows actual miles… yes I know that is not actual evidence) I tried to show the car as I found it and let the fans of this car figure out what I did when I first saw it. I am not a Chevy guy, but realize the importance of an original car and offered it for sale to someone who really likes these camaros more than I …FYI Bowtie Boy the reason I didn t restore this car yet is because I am in the process of installing a VERY EXPENSIVE high end spray booth that they paint Ferrari s and Lambos in in Italy…..so have been without a booth for a few months. I am backed up on work and this car showed up at an inconvenient time. For you 1 dollar conspiracy guys… craigslist wants a price when you list and I put it out to the market to come up with a price as this is not an easy car to value (unrestored, low miles, original not hacked up with the secretary V8) BTW I am an ASE certified mechanic very capable of doing all the work myself. I put the car out there in good faith. If you want it as I found it make an offer. If I start doing more work on it I will complete the resto myself early next year. My point is the condition of this car is an excellent car to start a restoration on. Not many original second gens out there. Thanks for your interest in my car

    Kind Regards

WallStreet, a close up picture of the brake pedal will go a long way to prove low miles, much mor than the picture of a 5 digit odometer or an oil change sticker with no date.

WallStreet- Don’t take anything seriously you read here. You are not talking to actual BUYERS but old car philosophers just letting off steam and giving their opinions about everything car related. You know what they say about opinions. just like a**holes, everybody’s got one.

Good job wallstreet, you are right about bowtie boys need to chill out a little. Craigslist does require a number in the price box when listing anything for sale on their website. Price of $1 is very common even on fully restored car to weed out tire kicker that have no intention of buying the vehicle. They will call just to ask every question that is in the ad, now that is a waste of sellers time. Most
Barn Finds are found by guys who turnaround and sell them so, does that make them a “parasite”?

The seller comes off as a complete @$$hole. Don’t know what he does for a living, don’t care. Get it running, do whatever, set your price and sell it. Don’t threaten what you’ll do if it doesn’t sell.

I like the solid front bumper better than the split on these cars, but you can keep the vinyl top and the bilious green colors. One of the best designs ever, ideal proportions and elegant detailing on what is basically a cheap car. A manual transmission and a relatively peppy V8 is an unbeatable combination. It doesn’t have to be a BBC and a 4-speed, a floor-shifted 3-speed with a torquey motor can still be fun.

The rust on this appears to be mostly superficial, but I’m no expert. Regardless of what is done, this will be a nice car.

Rear quarter has rust holes! Doors are starting to go. I’m thinking115K miles. Could be wrong, but i really DON’T think it has only 15k miles. For that matter, maybe the odometer doesn’t work.
Still not a bad car, but….call it like it is.

I don’t care for these cars, too small for me, but this one is neat. The 307 with a 3 speed automatic in such a light car will be very peppy, even with the aftermarket AC. I hope it finds a good home, and is kept original.

I’d clean it up, throw some nicer wheels on it, go through the mechanicals and drive it! Eventually respray her in that original green, and put in a mild 383 stroker with a th350 built to match, and some slightly upgraded brakes/suspension. Could have a great driver that you don’t feel terrible about not keeping 100% stock. If an early 2nd gen camaro was “the” car to me this would be as ideal as it gets…well aside from the lack of a 3rd pedal. A z28 or rs/ss is just too high dollar to mod up and actually drive around all the time.

I just hope whoever gets this keeps it green, and doesn’t make a clone of it. I’d even keep the vinyl top. Actually looks more interesting and unique than the typical red with black stripes split bumper it seems all 70 camaros are.

Just like my first car, minus the aftermarket a/c. Everyone is wise to brake pedal wear nowadays Miguel. Plenty of suppliers in the aftermarket reproduce replacements for popular cars like this Camaro.

Being a Camaro fan and loving the 70 model year, this car not so much…
My impression is 115,000 miles and alot rougher shape than presented.
The picture of the underside of the car looks much more nasty than 15,000 miles.

if this car had 115000 miles in the North East in the seventies, with all the salt they threw down, there would be nothing left of it. Forget the brake pedal wear look at the grain on the door panels, seats, steering wheel, console….. the carpets would be a mess … and they are original….and the dash plastic chrome would all be gone… you should come and see it, then render an opinion

WallStreet, you are trying to tell us that you have never seen a car with 100,000 miles on it that was well taken care of?
You cannot tell the miles on a car from the condition of a door panel or a steering wheel.

The brake pedal gets worn naturally from constant use.

Yes I know the pad can be replaced, but that would be obvious to anybody that knows the difference.

I think it was a garage kept 115k mile car owned by someone who rarely if ever took a passenger (no knee room with aftermarket air). This might explain the nice crack-free interior but the rust in the quarters and doors.

On second gen Camaros a good sign of low mileage is the door pins and the sound when closing the door. If you open the door(driverside) and lift from the bottom back edge and there is play in the hinges sign of more usage. Sec gen doors are very heavy and pin wear out with heavy uses. Low mileage cars always sound great. Unibody cars will sag over time plus worn pins change the way the door sounds and closes.

I would throw away the aftermarket A/C clean it up and drive it with some ralley wheels on it! The dash does appear to be in very good shape along with other inside components right down to the original radio and steering wheel! It might only be a 307 but another small block could be fitted in!

A math teacher in my high school (I graduated in 1978) drove one of these in the same color combo IIRC. Brings back memories. Can’t say I’ve seen one of these for sale recently but they used to be pretty common.

First thing I’d do with this one is rip out that under dash a/c nonsense and all the associated butchery under the hood. What a mess. A few years ago I bought a nice 66 New Yorker 4DHT with dealer installed a/c. What an indignity to an otherwise nice car. I think the installer took three attempts with a 1″ hole saw to the firewall to find the right spot. I removed all that stuff and found another 66 Chrysler with factory installed a/c to act as a donor car and make things right. Man that cast potmetal dash is heavy!

Aftermarket A/C is a waste! I spent years in a Chevy dealership making used cars ready for sale and new car add-ons, vinyl tops, stereos, a/c, etc. Nothing but complaints of cars stalling and not cooling properly. Factory a/c is the best!

I love this green color. Almost had one in the 90’s Might of been a ’72. It had the split bumpers and a slightly darker green. Love to save them all. But my new vintage truck is the list to work and play on.
