General Lee Wannabe: 1970 Dodge Charger R/T Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

One of the surprise hits of the late 1960s was the second-generation Dodge Charger. After a modest distribution of 53,000 copies in 1966-67, sales exploded to 178,000 in 1968-69. With fresh success in their hands, Dodge changed the Charger little for 1970 in anticipation of another redesign the following year. The seller has a ’70 model that’s in parts and pieces in a barn, intended to be a General Lee tribute one day. But that’s not going to happen on the seller’s watch, so this assortment of components is available here on eBay for $30,000 OBO. To see the Dodge in person, you’ll need to trek to Covington, Pennsylvania.

After a wild ride in 1968-69, Charger sales cooled by more than 45% in 1970. We don’t know why other than that a new player arrived that year in the form of the Dodge Challenger pony car, which attracted 77,000 buyers in its first outing. The seller says this car was a Charger R/T bought as a project, but the VIN decodes as a basic Charger with a 318 cubic inch V8 (the R/T would have had a 440). That also explains the reinforcing the seller has done up front to accommodate a 440 V8 and 727 automatic transmission out of a camper (heavier duty).

This non-running DIY Charger is not complete, missing such things as the front fenders and trunk. But the floors are all said to be new (AMD brand). Also from AMD are new rear frame rails and rear quarter panels. A bunch of new suspension components have been secured and are ready for the seller to install (somehow). While there is a Dana rear housing, there is no differential.

The interior is said to be black (condition unknown), and the paint was once orange (Hemi Orange?). Putting this car together as a General Lee or a regular Charger will take a lot of vision and work. Do you agree with the number of zeros in the asking price? Would the seller’s ante be better applied to a vehicle that’s more complete and already drivable?

With two missing one year only (front fenders (NA from AMD) and with used ones (if you can find them) easily selling in excess of $1k, I’d say the chances of this being restored to original are slim to none. A “jigsaw” puzzle of missing parts that is NOWHERE near worth $30K (IMO)! Will probably end up being parted out for much less.

He might be getting a head start on parting it out, he’s selling a 68-70 console for $800 on a separate listing.

It’s hard to see this getting anywhere close to the asking price. This might be a case where he added up all of his receipts to come up with his asking price.

New reproduction consoles sell for less than half of that; I found one @ Van’s Auto LLC, for $249. + $59 shipping!

Oh yeah, that will be on the road in no time. I can hear the Dixie horn from here. Thank the Good Lord that Cletis and Clayboy preserved it so well all these years. Now the boys will be able to buy dentures!

You have to give the seller credit. It takes cajones to ask someone to pay $30k for the privilege of cleaning out his garage.

I like to play a little game in my head when I see cars and their asking price. It’s called One Too Many Zeroes.

And this car is the winner of the day.

The Dukes destroyed somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 to 300 Dodge Chargers for a moronic T.V. show. They were all 1969 models. None were 1970’s. Just an F.Y.I.
I bought a brand new 1970 Charger. The color was Lemon Twist. My friends called it the Taxicab. Kept it 6 months and replaced it with a ’56 Chevy that I drove for 23 years.

And the hits just keep on comin’. With the exception of the Vette also advertised here today, this is the most unrealistic price out there. How could anyone possibly keep a straight face when placing this ad? There is definitely something in the air today.

Something in the water in Covington, Pennsylvania 🙄. Yet another unrealistic price for a 2nd gen Charger.

Not all jumped cars were 69’s. Some were 68’s too. I talked once with the guy in charge of getting them ready for the screen. Just placed a center nose section from a 69 in the grille and filmed from afar.
