Times have changed. In 1987, I bought a 1979 Toyota SR5 pickup for $1,500 with 75,000 miles. My son is currently looking for a used Toyota 4-wheel-drive pickup, but with his modest budget is having a hard time finding anything in decent shape. Well here’s one in excellent shape, but sadly, I’m sure it will reach out of his budget range quickly. Here is a 1985 Toyota Pickup Xtracab 4X4 for sale here on eBay in Jacksonville, Florida.
It’s not often you see a 33-year-old Toyota pickup in this condition. First of all, it only has 57,947 miles. The truck is originally from Washington state but was more recently registered in Alabama. The truck was stored in a detached garage and saw limited used on the owner’s 20-acre property. The truck has been repainted at some point, but still is not showroom condition. There is no rust on the body or frame.
The interior looks new. The seats are in awesome condition and the headliner is clean and in excellent condition. There are no cracks in the dashboard and the stereo radio works. In 1985, Xtracab meant just a little extra cab room for Toyota. It did not allow for additional passengers behind the front seat, but to be used for storage only.
The engine is the 22R-E with electronic fuel injection paired with an automatic transmission. The engine runs strong and the transmission shifts smoothly. Recent services have included new timing chain, new front shocks, new muffler, and new spark plugs and wires. The seller has provided 250 HD photos for viewing.
This truck can be used as a daily driver or used sparingly. What kind of use would you give this truck?
Listing already pulled
eBay listing says to call or text Dealer to buy this truck before the auction ends … Guess that’s what happened! Looks like a real nice truck … We will probably never know the actual selling price.
Why would a Toyota with only 58,000 miles need a new muffler and a new timing chain?
Probably needed exhaust due to condensation not evaporating during short trips. My 57K mile survivor needed exhaust & starter at only 20 yrs old.
It’s certainly possible.
Base model with an automatic, ugh ! boring and slow truck. Not going to lose sleep over it. That 85′ black Supra is a different story. I will lose a ton of sleep over that beauty . Funny how they put a new timing chain on a Toyota engine with ONLY 57,000 miles ? ? ? I’ve owned about a dozen vehicles with the 22R and 22RE engines. Timing chains are not needed at that low of mileage.
Really? Be quiet. This truck isn’t meant for power or beauty. It is a timeless vehicle with proven reliability over the last 33 years. Your complaints are literally first world problems. Be gone
Yeah, right! They may be slow, but boring, it ain’t! I had a 1990 Toyota 4Runner with an automatic transmission. While it was slow, it was still fun to drive. The only thing I didn’t like was its fuel economy.
The timing chain was the only weak spot of the 22re. It was fixed on my ‘92 at about 100k. Still running strong now at 220k.

Awesome looking truck! I remember when Toyota trucks looked like this. My older brother, Chip, had one like this. I think his had a 5spd manual transmission. He had it since brand new until recently, when he bought a more recent Toyota Tacoma. :)
What a great old and reliable truck, would love have that little beast up here in New England to run around and do the weekend errands!
Is this like the one from back to the future. Ya know, where Marty and Jennifer fake out Needles and the boys in his old Bronco 4×4. Not highly optioned like the movie truck, but same model right?
22r’s were famous for having a noisy chain if you didn’t use an oil filter with an anti-drainback valve. Sometimes to the point of slapping and breaking the guides. Most likely somebody thought it needed a new chain when the proper oil filter would have fixed the problem.
I’d buy a Toyota Pickup truck of this vintage if there were still examples with less than 50k original miles on the odometer.
