Grandpa Car: 1963 Ford Galaxie Sedan

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Galaxie was added to the Ford lineup in 1959 as a step up from the Fairlane. Throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s, the Galaxie competed head-to-head with Chevrolet’s Impala. For the generation produced from 1960 to 1964, the 1963 model year may have had the cleanest styling of them all. The nameplate capitalized on the “Space Race” that began in the 1950s. The seller has a very clean ’63 Galaxie (not a 500), but it’s a basic car power-wise. Located in Mifflintown, Pennsylvania, this survivor-quality machine is available here on eBay. The current bid is $2,550, but there’s a reserve waiting to be satisfied.

While most Galaxie buyers opted for a V8, the standard engine was a 223 cubic inch inline-6, and that’s what appears to be residing under the seller’s hood. Economy was no doubt the purpose of this automobile, which probably explains why this Ford also has a “3-on-the-tree” manual transmission instead of an automatic. Ford produced 844,500 full-size automobiles in 1963, and 82,400 were Galaxie 4-door sedans like this one. The rest of the roster includes the 300, Galaxie 500, Galaxie 500XL, and an assortment of station wagons.

The listing for this 1963 Galaxie provides no real information besides an odometer reading of 87,000 miles. Though offered by a private seller, it sounds as though it was written by a dealer with no personal knowledge of the vehicle. Is it original, or has it been partially or fully restored? The body and paint look really good, as does the interior does except for the separation of fabric where the driver would sit.

As long as you’re not looking for a flashy muscle car from the 1960s, this Ford could be a great vintage find. It’s the kind of car your grandfather might have purchased new back in the day. No frills but solid construction. With a full complement of passengers, it’s going to take a while to get up to 60 mph.

Wow super clean. In my opinion 1963 had the best grill of this era of Galaxie and Fairlane. Love the 3 on the tree but not sure I’d want to live with it.
This would be a really fun affordable classic for someone who actually wants to use it.

Actually the center trim below the trunk latch indicates that it is indeed a 500.

That’s a real honest car. Wish I could own it.

The badging on the front fender also indicates it is a Galaxie 500.
What a clean , fine looking car.

The 223 six banger was a good, reliable engine. The stickshift should be a help with moving this heavy beast around.

Speaking of grandfather cars, my grandfather bought one of these new, equipped exactly like this (6-cylinder, 3-speed), though his was not the 500, just the plain Galaxie and it was a two-door post. About as basic as you can get, though his did have an AM radio. I remember it well.
