Gray Market AMG: 1975 Mercedes 450 SLC

This 1975 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC is a gray-market import that was modified by AMG when new. AMG, Mercedes’ in-house performance skunkworks, was a bit more of a rogue operation back in the day, with no standard dotted line guiding how a performance car should be built. It was really up to the whims of the customer, and cars like this one have some options that other AMG vehicles of the era did not. The 450SLC listed here on eBay with a $25,000 Buy-It-Now and the option to submit a best offer.

The first thing you notice about this specimen is the AMG bodykit, which consisted of the side skirts, front air dam, and rear bumper skirt. A period-correct rear spoiler adorns the trunk, and 16 inch Ronal alloy wheels wearing color-matched green paint give the exaggerated pinstriping a reason to be there. The SLC designation indicates that this is a hardtop coupe, as opposed to a convertible wearing an optional hardtop. Obviously, the Mercedes wears other obvious clues as to its European market origins, including Euro-spec lighting, bumpers, and license plates.

The interior features green leather that matches the exterior nicely. For being original bucket seats, they remain in impressive condition, with the seller just observing some repairable wear to the driver’s seat. A period Giugiaro steering wheel is a sharp addition to the interior, but the rest of the cabin seems rather subdued. That’s not a bad thing, but I’ve grown accustomed to seeing the center stack laden with handsome burled wood trim. However, some of those decorative elements are reserved for U.S. market cars, with the Euro-spec examples far less ornate inside.

However, who really cares? This is a genuine, customer-ordered AMG Mercedes. The car sits on firmer, lower springs along with an AMG-specific rear axle. The seller indicates no engine modifications have been performed, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing when you consider how many factory hot-rods are absolutely hammered by this stage of their useful life. The engine bay looks spotless, along with the rest of the car, and this mill likely breathes easier thanks to the less restrictive emissions equipment Euro cars usually come equipped with. A lot of money, but hard to repeat.

I would love this with a manual. Cool M-B and these are among my favorite wheels ever.

Propane/gasoline hybrid conversions are popular in Europe. They even make toroidal tanks that fit in the spare tire well.

I never warmed to the styling of the convertible MB versions of this era, but this coupe has nice lines.

Reaaly not that hard to find others like it. Way overpriced in my humble opinion. If it was the AMG 6.0 engine version then well worth it and more but with the standard engine – not so much. BTW they were available with a manual shift in Europe.

Unless I read it wrong, this is not a grey-market import. From the ebay listing:

    Item location:
    Sint Anthonis, Netherlands

    Ships to:
    Local pick-up only

IIRC, vehicles over twenty (maybe 25?) years old are exempt from import emission standards.

This is not a ‘barn Find’. It’s a used car listing.
