This 1973 GMC Motorhome looks like just the kind of project you want to pick up and run with given it seems to need minimal sorting to return to road-going use. The seller notes he searched high and low for the right one, and is regretfully selling this one on due to a home renovation project. The GMC wears awesome period colors of yellow over green, which the seller notes as being on the more desirable interior colors. The GMC does need some work to be driven safely, including rear brake lines, and the seller will let you do the work on his property if you’d like to drive it out of there. Find the GMC here on eBay with bidding to $9,500 and no reserve.
These GMCs are such a great choice for someone just breaking into the R/V lifestyle, and who has a fondness for nicely styled machines. So many motorhomes seemingly focus on having acres of space and nothing else; one of the best attributes of the GMC is the clever packaging that offered owners all of the convenience and comfort you’d want in a motorhome without having to drive something that requires a commercial driver’s license to maneuver safely. The seller notes he recently bought and fitted all new aluminum mags and 10-ply tires at a cost of $3,700.
The seller claims the GMC has the most desirable interior offered in one of these front-wheel drive motorhomes, but I’m not sure what exactly the criteria is. Certainly, it’s a wonderfully period-correct color and the cabinetry matches the green shag carpeting up front, which also features green cloth inserts in the bucket seats. The cabinetry is sharp, and definitely period correct, so I can certainly understand the seller’s rationale in that regard. It’s also a great pairing with the yellow exterior, which the seller claims does not need significant paintwork, noting that the original gelcoat is in good shape.
As you gaze over the photos, it’s clear the GMC has been loved. There’s really not much to fault inside or out in terms of cosmetics, but there are some issues beyond the rear brakes that need attention. The seller recommends the following work before it gets back on the road, which can also be done on his property if desired: have the radiator flushed, swap in new radiator hoses, along with a new thermostat and battery, and then perform a basic oil and transmission fluid change. Not a huge list, and the seller has addressed the front brakes and rebuilt the carburetor. It’s located in Wisconsin, and looks like an awesome project.
Oh, here we go again. “Where the (freak)’s my truck?””Couple of guys took it out to get it washed, sir.””I’ve gotta pee.””Hold it!””I’m getting too old for this Shhhh!!!!” I’ve seen that show so many times I’ve almost got the script memorized. “I hate tourist season!””Such a truck would be great for picking up girls in Minsk.” ‘Local boys repel Yankee horde.’ If nothing else these motorhomes will be forever immortalized in Stripes…
That green interior would really complement a green and cream two-tone exterior paint scheme.
Get all the references out of the way so we don’t have to deal with them later. People love their movie quotes.
“This is one heavily armed recreational vehicle.” “You wouldn’t believe the the stuff thing thing can do”. “It’s Czechoslovakia, we zip in, we zip out, no big deal”
Doggone it, $9,500?? I love these and it’s already located where I want to be.( what, Colorado ain’t doin’ it? No,,no it isn’t) I’ve said it many times, of all the motorhomes to come down the pike, I don’t think any of them are as nice as the GMC’s, and it’s a 50 year old design. While it’s out of my price range, unless, of course I become a gypsy, and the way the world is headed, it is the lifestyle of many today, I’d buy this in a minute. They are generally well maintained, don’t get driven in the slop, and parts are a block away. And if your neighbor ticks you off, roll in the cords and adios!
When I was looking for a lake cabin in northern Wisconsin a few years ago I had an idea about buying a lake lot, putting in a well, septic, electric and propane then building a pole-building and buying one of these to keep inside. If the pole building was designed and positioned correctly you could open garage doors and have a lake front view and still have a vehicle for short trips or whatever and keep it safe and dry if you wish. This way it avoids the many lake building rules that don’t allow permanent camping vehicles.
This would look right at home parked in front of 11222 Dilling Street

I bet Sam bought one when he retired and it was his and Alice’s love shack.

I’m with Howard. A great value, someone should buy this, give it what it needs and hit the road. It’s hard to believe but there are a lot of great Americans out there.
“You know who’d love this? RUSSELL!” (Another Stripes reference for those who are not familiar with this classic comedy)

Sold for $11,600! I think that was a true bargain.
