Halloween Special: Orange 1976 Dodge Warlock

With Halloween around the corner, perhaps it’s time to put a Warlock in your garage. This Dodge pickup, part of the company’s oddly named “adult toys” lineup, is a running project that can power itself onto a trailer – but not much else. The seller includes a vague reference to it being a “pre-production” model but doesn’t elaborate. Find it here on eBay with bidding over $2K and the reserve unmet.

Now, the fact that the Warlock trim was produced in small batches in 1976 may be what the seller is referring to as “pre-production” (production numbers were higher in the ensuing two years.) More curious to me is the presence of what looks like bullet holes in the glass, but not being an ammunition expert, those cracks could be the result of bored teenagers with pellet guns. The body doesn’t look terrible, but it’s hard to get a full view of the truck.

The “tuff” steering wheel is present, but again, we’re forced to use our imaginations about the rest. Does it have bucket seats or a bench? Is it torn up or intact? The dash doesn’t appear to be cracked and there looks to be an aftermarket tach or some other gauge behind the steering wheel. These Warlocks were offered in 2WD and 4WD guise; this one is the former, with power going to the rear wheels.

Speaking of power, there’s a 440 under the hood and the seller has a second non-operable unit that sounds like it will be included. If the 440 is numbers-matching, this makes the Warlock far more desirable than many of the other “adult toys” editions that were options with the more common 318 or even the Slant 6. An early model Warlock with a numbers-matching 440 is an interesting truck indeed and deserves a better listing than this.

“Pre-production” might also mean, someone with an orange pickup with a 440 went and put Warlock stripes and trim on it after that model came out. Is there a way on these to tell with certainty that the Warlock option package was present wen delivered?

I could be wrong, but I always thought the “Warlock” was a Plymouth. The Dodge being a “Little Red Express”. Maybe the tail gate has been changed. The Warlocks were black as in the photo here. I also don’t see the openings for the exhaust in the steps.

A local Dodge dealer would take the basic trucks with the 225, add a dual stack and wheels, then added paint and stripes. The bottoms of the exhaust stacks didn’t even go under the running boards.Looked silly.

And I don’t think any of them came w/440, IIRC 360’s were the HiPo motors by then.

I never saw one that wasn’t black!

I also only seen them in “Black”, but I have seen 440’s in them(I did not decode them), but if my memory is correct the 360’s was the quickest of the two. Not only the quickest of the two, but also the fastest of all american auto’s of the time.
